- One of our living walls – we have 3 on each floor
- we also have distinct spaces within the extension - supported learning, a digital scholarship space - where we are working with history colleagues in planning something as partners, an open research space where our OR colleagues will be based, a digital studio for maker space activities and similar – and an events and exhibition space more of which later – and a safepod to come for accessing secure data – bringing researchers and data right into the centre of our building
- So how did we pull all this together to create a new vision for the kind of library we want to be? I’m not going to go through how we created our new vision as that would be a plenary in its own right. Suffice to say that we worked closely across the university from January 2020 to January 2021 (with a short gap around March 2020), across the library to create provocations to drive our new vision, and that phil Cheeseman and I went eyeball to eyeball on a weekly basis to craft it. It now forms the basis of what we will do over the next five years – our roadmap, annual plan and PDRs. It's challenging - but we all wanted it to be so
- In three words this captures the essence – this is who we want to be – this came from a library staff group in one of our vision workshops – these three words cut to the chase on what I think the library is for.
- I’m now going to take you through our vision statements to give you a flavour of how we see our future direction.
- It's not a case of the physical and the digital - it's space and we should consider both
- Co-create - we are working in partnership with researchers on a few projects, including the new Lancaster Digital Collections, but also given the current climate, what opportunitiues there are to co-create content. Tom Insights Liverpool e-textbooks
- EDI sits centrally to our ambition, we want to put it at the heart of everything we do - i won't pretend it will be easy, but we are taking a lead in the institution in relation to anti-racism, as you will hear from Josh Sendall at a session later today. However, it goes across everything, every one who uses our library physically or digitally - or could use our library - should feel they are welcomed and see themselves represented. We also have a huge role to play in wellbeing – as the pandemic has reiterated
- This goes to the heart of thing – being active in areas not traditionally seen as library business – research partners (with a new building to support us), working on anti-racism – we want to bring disruptive innovation series of seminars on eden
- We are a global university – with campuses across the globe, but our local communities remain key – we are a campus university with areas of significant deprivation on our doorstep, how do we reach out to them – civic role local colleges grammar schools - partnerships with international
- Consciously opportunities repeated: opportunities of the pandemic: visible, if the library is open and busy, then the university is open, we are prominent because of how far ahead we are digitally, challenges: but is that all there is? No, we have other opportunities because of being visible – we used the visibility of the pandemic to talk about us doing other things and taking a m ore prominent and visible role. Focusing both on the now and the future in parallel – sort the pandemic response while getting traction on creating a new vision. It brought us attention at the highest levels.
