Research4Life and AGORA provide free or low-cost access to academic and professional content online to reduce the scientific knowledge gap between higher and lower income countries. Research4Life includes four programs covering health, agriculture, environment and development. AGORA specifically focuses on agriculture, fisheries, food and related topics, providing access to up to 6,500 journals and 22,000 books. Eligible institutions in lower income countries can register for free access to Research4Life resources, while those in higher income countries pay a nominal $1,500 annual fee.

Institutions in 72 of the world’s poorest countries receive free access to
journal and book content via Research4Life.
Institutions in a further 45 countries pay US $1,500 per year for a
subscription to the Research4Life content – an effective discount of over
99.9%. Fees go to Research4Life capacity development.

10. Eligibility criteria 1: Country
§ Countries eligible selected on basis on several criteria:
• Total GNI and GNI per capita (World Bank figures),
• United Nations Least Developed Country (LDCs) List and
• Human Development Index (HDI).
§ Reviewed annually.
§ Based on these factors, eligible countries are divided into
two groups: A and B
Group A
These are the countries comprising
the UN Least Developed Country
List.

11. Eligibility criteria 2: Institution
Within eligible countries, eligible categories of institutions are:
• national universities,
• professional schools (medicine, agriculture, pharmacy,
public health, engineering, etc.),
• research institutes,
• teaching hospitals and healthcare centers,
• government offices,
• national libraries,
• agricultural extension centers and
• local non-governmental organizations.

Note: Anyone can browse AGORA’s collection of journals
without logging in and get to the publishers’ websites and
abstracts of journal articles. However, only students, faculty
and staff at eligible, registered institutions can access full-text
articles, with institutional credentials. AGORA log in does not
give access to all services offered on publishers’ websites.
