CIARD Good Practices
Online Meeting, 9th June 2014
Purpose of this online event
• Seek guidance from the CIARD community
how to proceed with the “good practices”
(a.k.a “Pathways”)
• Introduction (15 minutes)
• Discussion on 3 questions (30 minutes each)
Context
The original concept
“…provide an introduction to the ways in which research outputs can be
made more available, accessible and applicable (the 3As) for the
stakeholders who will derive benefit from this information and
knowledge. The CIARD Manifesto and the CIARD Checklist of Good
Practices are statements of what needs to be done in order to achieve
the enhancement of the 3As. The CIARD Pathways are practical guides,
showing how the different elements of the Manifesto and the Checklist
can be achieved by institutions around the world.”
They aim to be:
• concise
• not too technical i.e. they provide an introduction
• linked to other resources which provide more detailed guidance and
best practice.
Evidence of use (such as we have it)
Figure1 : Top unique page views at www.ciard.net (January 2009-March 2013)
What it tells us
• Pathways are an important part of the CIARD
offer
• Numbers of hits are relatively low
Most comments supportive, but
• They are too complicated
• Not practical enough
• Not dynamic enough (links to AIMS, IMARK
and other sources of advice)
• They need to be more local
Partner survey: CIARD Review 2013
• Develop in a wiki environment, where they can
evolve and mature
• Expose in a mini-portal, linking to other resources
including IMARK, AIMS
• Develop versions in Spanish, French (and possibly
other languages)
• Link to relevant tools
2013 Consultation: proposed process
• Grouping of Good practices has been revised:
– Group 1: Organizational culture and capacity
– Group 2: Availability and accessibility of information and
data
– Group 3: Sharing of knowledge (social processes)
• Content has been reshuffled, new content proposed (e.g.
Linked Open Data, guidance on other data types like soil data,
genetic data)
• Working groups members have been recruited
– Group 1 – 26
– Group 2 – 36
– Group 3 – 40
Since 2013 Consultation
Today
TODAY the CIARD Good Practices include more types
of content additionally to the text, with the objective
to enrich it with information from the CIARD
Community:
• Forums
• Webinars
• Posts from the community members
• Interviews
• Persons with experience in the topics
• Links to additional resources
• Related events
Good practices for the Group 1 have very recently
been finalized
Recommendations – 2013 Status
Mini-portal - a minimum of text with links to other
online resources and tools providing more
detailed advice, training, and examples of best
practice (particularly those produced by
partners)
This approach taken with Group 1 revisions, e.g.
blog posts, webinars, interviews, related events,
experts directory...
---- Achieved, but with very little input from the
Community
English, French and Spanish (and possibly more)
versions to be developed
English only
---- Not achieved, unclear how to proceed with
translations
The Pathways to be redeveloped in three major
groups: Group 1: Organizational culture and
capacity; Group 2: Availability and accessibility of
information and data; Group 3: Sharing of
knowledge (social processes)
Groupings were agreed by partners and the
CIARD community
---- Achieved
Pathways developed in a wiki environment within
which they evolve. Quality control to be built into
the process of development
Good practices integrated in the CMS used by
www.ciard.net, Drupal.
---- Achieved, however very few members in the
CIARD Community have registered
Redevelopment : summary of progress
Issues today
• Development procedure very much focused on a collaborative
editing
– Experience with Group 1: poor participation from the WG members
(Dgroups) => one person effort, 3 out of 26 WG members provided
feedback
• No good linkages with the rest of the community
– Difficult to inform that a Pathway has been published and can be used
• Lack of ownership of Good practices
– Unclear process of development and maintenance
– Who does what and when?
1. What do we think of the proposed scope of the CIARD Good
Practices?
2. Who do we see as the audience for the Good Practices?
3. How can the Good Practices be taken forward? Do we want
a product soon, or is the community process leading?
Issues for discussion and agenda
