  • There are a lot of good reasons to network – in addition to cutting your search time down. 25 million jobs never get posted. There’s only one way to access them. NETWORK! NEXT: So let’s start tonight with some good ole fashioned hi-touch introductions. Please find a partner …
  • After they share with one another, bring them back to large group. Write a few of their goals for the night on the BOARD. Share what we can/can’t do. NEXT: What goals we can achieve tonight.
  • Hi-Touch is all about showing up in a present, conscious, personalized way. It’s about follow-through online and off. It’s the old-fashioned things. Thank you notes, face-to-face meetings, real conversations. Showing up in this way will ignite your network in a whole new way. They’ll be energized by your energy and focus. And your network will grow. I want you to feel more comfortable with explaining who you are – your brand. And walk away more connected tonight! NEXT: So let’s do an exercise around your “positioning statement.” First, I’ll tell you what we’ll be doing. Then I’ll tell you exactly what it is and give you an example.
  • Point of exercise – we do this all the time. We just don’t usually consciously think about how to present it strategically. Ask the person to tell you back what you said. Did they get it right? Is this what you want them to walk away with given your audience? Did you give them your business card or ask for theirs? NEXT: But it’s a critical first step in the networking process.
  • NEXT: What’s in it. Here’s an example …
  • NEXT: You can see that knowing who you are and being able to share it comfortably and concisely is important. And it’s not easy. So let’s take a step back and find how this becomes easier for people. Let’s look at a career planning model as a starting point.
  • NEXT: Let’s assume for tonight that you know yourself really well and you’re ready to find work. I find people make one key error at this point. They aren’t always clear about whether they’re still in the “Research Options” stage or if they’re in the ACT stage of networking. So let me define the differences because it will make a big difference in your exchanges. I want to highlight this.
  • Subtle difference, but it’s key. Your audience won’t be confused if you know where you stand. NEXT: What these conversations are about at a deeper level.
  • What we mean by this is everything is connected. You don’t know where one experience or one unplanned meeting will lead. Look for the synergy of what you’re doing. Keep following the opportunities ‘til they lead somewhere. Things can pop up months later, when you least expect it, if you stay connected. Remember, it’s not only a concept, but it’s a lifestyle. The Valley is a pretty independent kind of place – let’s build community!
  • Where’s the synergy? Of your ONLINE and OFFLINE activities? Where’s the thread? Follow it in a quality, personalized, HI-TOUCH way – and your process will build and deepen. It may seem time-consuming, difficult, but it’s the new work &amp; life paradigm. So ease into it. AND Linkedin makes it so much easier. Just make those interactions hi-touch – and ideally, have them lead to offline (in-person) conversations. NEED HELP WITH LINKEDIN – PLEASE SCHEDULE A 30 MINUTE SESSION WITH US.   • You had a lot more of these as a kid. Bring back that inner kid to the process. This can be fun if you know it can turn out well. Any result will be learning, growth. We’re motivated to act when we’re in pain. Use it to your advantage. NEXT: Like a kid, BE CURIOUS!
  • Think about it … how can you get your curiosity EXCITED? NEXT: Curiosity leads to CHANCE – to unplanned career opportunities
  • Careers are not logical and linear no matter what the 1950s propaganda had us believe. It’s been a lot of planned happenstance and You’ve made luck happen all of your life. Think about it … How have … NEXT: Let’s explore this a little more … what if you set an intention?
  • It could be anything … Meet Bill Gates Get a job with one of the recruiters next door. They just want to like you. But you need them to meet you for them to do that. Remember – life is not a dress rehearsal.
  • Make PLANNED HAPPENSTANCE happen in a variety of ways. There are lots of ways to do it. Sometimes our creativity and ideas get shut down when we’re stressed so let this be a good reminder list for you. It’s important to have structure to your days and weeks. Preparing for your next opportunity can be energizing and positive when you approach it from a variety of healthy angles. Know what motivates you … what really gets you going, excited about life and build it in.
  • Take that next step to make something happen. I want you to show up.
