Managing Your Research
Literature
Sanjaya Mishra
In this presentation
 Literature Review
 Document Management using Technology (not
particular one)
 About Plagiarism
 Promoting Open Access
Literature Reviews
 Broadly three types: historical, conceptual,
methodological
 Searching and managing reference
 Coding the concepts
 Writing (in your own words):
– Tone: constructively inform the readers; do not be
over critical
– Tense: past or present?
– Thought: develop a theoretical underpinning; build
constructs and give meaning to the writing by
weaving a logical story
Managing Document
 First, a good comprehensive search (use
appropriate databases, reviews, indexes;
beyond Google)
 Library Cards are old fashioned; use a
bibliographic management too, such as
 Take notes while searching; add your code to
the notes to help sorting
 Use your own systematic approach – I use a
two column table in the world file, add my
codes in one column, and notes in another
with link to my database.
Plagiarism is a habit…
 Habit is a type of behaviour that is repeated regularly;
these are acquired either intentionally or unintentionally
 Unintentionally plagiarism happens in most cases, due to
lack of training and rigour in academia
 Plagiarism happens, when you steal someone else idea
or word and pass off as yours without crediting the
source
 Remember ideas are not copyrighted; expression of
ideas are. But, idea in the sense of a plot in a story or
drama, if used without credit is plagiarism.
 Paraphrasing without credit to the source too is
plagiarism
 But, from where this habit comes?
Stages of Creating …
 Copying: Everyone of us learn by copying. It is an
essential element of learning.(early schooling)
 Imitating: modelling behaviour of our parents and
teachers to imitating an artist’s work (maybe up to
senior secondary stage)
 Generating: where start compiling data to generate
some reports (normally at undergraduate stage, but also
happen at school level)
 Creating: actually creating something new, writing a
dissertation; designing a new experiment; developing a
new product, etc (beyond graduation)
Plagiarism comes from:
 Lack of fear of consequences of getting
caught (loss of image, job, etc)
 Lack of training and rigour in writing process
 Lack of conceptual understanding, and
language skills
 Lack of understanding of open online,
copyright and open access
 Lack of honour code in educational
institutions
Reference/Bibliography Styles
 APA Style, Ed 6
 MLA Style
 Chicago Manual of Style, Ed 16
 Harvard Style
 Indian Standard for Information and
Documentation 2009
Thank You
