Keep the employees happy
Control through hierarchy or formal
communication
Always have a harmonious relationship
with the employees to achieve good
performance
Solve the problems of the employees
Motivate employees all the time
If you have chosen

9. Definition of Leadership
A simple definition of leadership is that
it is the art of motivating a group of
people to act toward achieving a
common goal.
To put it even more simply, the leader is
the inspiration and director of the action.
He or she is the person in the group who
possesses the powerful combination of
personality and skills that makes others
want to follow his or her direction.
Now, let us identify the important leadership skills and
recognize two prime models of leadership.

Whole Brain Model
The Whole Brain Model
suggests that leaders need
to understand the psyche of
their subordinates to
communicate better. This is
more of a situational-person
approach.
The four thinking styles in
the whole brain model are:
• Logician: Logical,
quantitative, analytical, and
fact-based,
• Visionary: Holistic,
intuitive, synthesizing, and
integrating,
•Communicator:
Interpersonal, feeling-based,
kinesthetic, and emotional,
and
• Organizer: Sequential,
organized, detailed, and
planned.

Level 5 Leadership: Becoming a Great Leader
Now that you have learned about the Whole Brain Model, let us discuss about the Level 5
Leadership Model. Jim Collins created this model on developing leadership skills. He says
that a leader can reach greatness only when he or she has absolute selflessness, has a
strong personal commitment toward goals, and brings out the best in his or her followers.
13. Level 5 Leadership: Hierarchy
Level 5 is the highest level in a hierarchy of leadership capabilities. However, to
be a full-fledged Level 5 Executive, you need the capabilities of all the lower
levels, plus the special characteristics of level 5.
Level 1: Highly Capable Individual
Makes productive contributions
through talent, knowledge, skills,
and good work habits.
Level 2: Contributing Team
Member
Contributes to the achievement of group
objectives; work effectively with others in
a group setting.
Organizes people and resources toward effective and
efficient pursuit of pre-determined objectives.
Catalyzes commitment to and vigorous pursuit of a clear
and compelling vision; stimulates the group to high
performance standards.
Builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical
combination of personal humility and professional will.
14. Sure by all means. I have
asked one of my team
members to work on it.
Can you send me the
project blueprint by
evening?
No Gary. It’s a very tedious
and time-consuming task. It’s
very difficult to complete.
Hi Kevin! Have you
completed the blueprint
for the project?
Scenario
Now, let us look at a scenario.
15. Hi Gary! Thanks for
sending me the blueprint.
Awesome work!
You are most welcome! It
was a very interesting
task.
This is really cool! I
got Gary working
on the assignment.
Hi Kevin! How come you
are here?

16. Think about these questions for a few minutes.Think about these questions for a few minutes.
Who had more work to do – the manager or the employee?
Is the manager a good leader?
Is he spending his time productively?
Scenario (Contd.)
Many of us do the same thing that the manager did. Wanting to complete tasks on
time and to ensure high quality, we end up doing the work of others.
Now, let us learn the art of delegating effectively.
18. Leaders generally think that employees are not
yet ready to handle the tasks.
So, why do leaders make mistakes in delegation?
Leaders feel that employees can create problems
if they give them ‘important’ tasks.
Leaders think that they will lose their importance
in the organization if they delegate work.
Leaders carry the ‘problems’ of the employees on
their backs. MythsMyths

However, these are
actually myths.
19. Delegation: Key to Effective Leadership (Contd.)
Good leaders delegate their tasks, so they can spend more time strategizing and
thereby make a much more effective contribution to the organization.
Do we need systems and processes for better leadership?

Systems and Processes to Lead Better
Leaders are usually preoccupied in attending meetings. Even before they have
completed one task, something else that is just as urgent comes along. They run
around to meet their targets. What they should do is create systems and
processes to lead better. Leaders who do not do so finally become bottlenecks for
their teams.

Systems and Processes to Lead Better (Contd.)
When you create systems and processes, you avoid spending time on tasks that
can be easily done by employees themselves. When you put a system in place,
your team will know what to do even in your absence. Thus, you will have more
time to concentrate on critical tasks that only you as the leader can do.
22. Check Your Understanding
You are a production manager in a manufacturing company. Which of the
following tasks can you delegate?
Weekly and monthly reports
Estimation of planned and actual sales
Resolving customer complaints
New Product Development
Completing production of 100 XYZ components daily
Budgeting exercises Go to the next slide to know
the correct answer.
24. Check Your Understanding
What is the correct order of leadership levels (from bottom to top) in the Level 5
Leadership Model?
Contributing Team Member
Effective Leader
Level 5 Executive
Highly Capable Individual
Competent Manager
Go to the next slide to know
the correct answer.
25. Check Your Understanding
The correct order (from bottom to top) is:

26. Learning Activity
Marco and Maria work for ABC Company. After reading about them, answer the
question in the next slide.
Hi, I am Marco. I am a customer sales
executive. I sell ABC's products. My daily
tasks include making cold calls and
identifying customers. I also provide support
to my existing clients. I am expected to
comply with the standards and policies of the
company. My manager is a very informal
person. He never criticizes me.
Hi, I am Maria. I am a telesales person. I sell
ABC’s products. My goal is to sell 5,000
components per quarter. My yearly goal is to
increase the product sales by 10 percent. I
have also been assigned the important task
of reducing customer complaints by 20
percent on a yearly basis. These are goals
that I have set for myself with the help of my
manager. When I make a mistake, my
manager gives me feedback. He praises me
when I reach my targets.
27. Learning Activity
You have read about Marco and Maria working for ABC company? Who do you
think is happier?
If Maria is your choice, you are
right. She has clearly defined
roles and responsibilities. She
knows what is expected of her
and has realistic targets. Her
tasks are well-defined and
result-oriented.
If Marco is your choice, you
are wrong. He would not be a
happy employee. When it is
time to assess his
performance, he will not know
on what basis his manager
will be accessing him. If he
gets a bad score, he will be
frustrated and angry.
