I was born in Huambo - Angola in 1953, descendant from the first settlers in Sa Da Bandeira, now Lubango in Angola. Both my paternal grandparents were born in Angola. In 1975, during the escalation of the Angolan war among the three Liberation Parties, we left Benguela, where I was working as a Civil Engineer for the Department of Public Works at the age of 22 and was also a Maths Teacher at the local High School. I spent one week in a refugee camp in Grootfontein in Namibia followed by four weeks in a refugee camp in Cullinan and one week in another refugee camp in Lyndhurst.
