7. Power Source for Electrical Drives
 The Source of Power at the drilling rigs are diesel powered power packs which generates the
voltage at 600 volts.
 Normally there are four or five power packs with alternators of power rating 1215 KVA.
 Transformers are present to step down the voltage to desirable level.
 63 KVA stand by Gen-Set are present to provide power during emergency.
Electrical Drives And Equipment
 The main electrical drives in a ACSCR drilling rig are DC motor driven.
 The dc motors are 900 HP or 1000 HP.
 AC motor drives are present for auxiliary equipment.

8. Electrically Powered Drilling Equipment
 Draw Works- Electrical motors are used to power up the draw works for running
in and pulling out of drilling pipe .
 Rotary table- Electrical motor is used for driving the rotary table to provide
rotary force to the Kelly.
 Mud Pumps- Pumps are driven by electrical motors to pump mud or cement
down the hole.

9. Control Of Electrical Drives
 The control of the DC drives is achieved by using complex system of electronic circuitry
and silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR).
 SCR convert the AC power to controlled DC power.
 All the circuitry and SCRs are housed inside the DC Power Control Room (PCRs).
 DC PCR also contains the generator controls and the AC PCR have the controls for
auxiliary AC drives.
