The document discusses paper roll handling and the importance of selecting the correct clamping force to prevent roll damage. It provides the following key points:
1) Paper rolls undergo many handling stages between the paper mill and printing machine, so specialized equipment is needed to prevent damage.
2) Both too high and too low clamping forces can damage paper rolls, causing out-of-roundness or rolls to slip.
3) The Force-Matic system is a fully mechanical pressure control that calculates and adjusts the optimal clamping force based on the weight and type of paper roll to prevent damage.
4. The paper rolls may be handled up to 15 times before delivery to the customer ! The transport chain of forest products is often very long. A paper roll may require as many as 15 handling stages on its way from paper machine to the printing machine. This makes it essential to use well-chosen, well-maintained equipment dedicated to forest products handling. Paper handling in general

14. Always follow the paper mill’s instructions! Selecting the correct clamping force
15. Excessive clamping force is one of the main reasons causing paper roll out-of-roundness during the clamp handling. Clamping force must be adjusted to suit the requirements of the paper roll and the handling chain. This is especially important with paper grades which are prone to out-of-roundness damage. In principle each paper roll and each handling operation would require individual clamping force setting. This can only be done with an automatic, intelligent clamping force control. 16. What is the correct clamping force? Too high clamping pressure • Rolls may deform • Roll cores may deform • Out-of-roundness
17.
18. • Out-of-roundness is measured by the difference of radius • Measured in millimeters (mm) • Depending of the amount of handling times it gives different shape of damage What is the correct clamping force? Definition of out-of-roundness Too high clamping pressure

20. Too low clamping pressure • Rolls may drop • Rolls may slide • Rolls may telescope
