of his work, Brian Gibbs enjoys playing with his

Originally known as lawn tennis, this sport
originated in the 12th or 13th century in France.
Today, tennis is governed by the International
Tennis Federation and enjoys status as an Olympic
sport. Outside of the Olympics, there are a number
of other prestigious tennis events held regularly.
These include the French Open.
The French Open began in the 1890s as a clay-court
tennis championship. Also known as the Roland-
Garros, after the court it is played on in Paris, the
Stade Roland-Garros. International players were
first invited to the event in the 1920s, leading to its
rebranding as the French Open.
