Oracle is one of the largest software companies in the world.
With sales of $38.84 billion, it is listed at number 17 on Forbes List of World’s Most Valuable Brands (Forbes).
Oracle has 400,000 customers, including 100 of the Fortune 100, 122,000 employees,
and supports 2.2 million students annually (Oracle).
The founders of Oracle were the first to recognize the potential of the relational database. They then developed the database and many other products to address every business need. That development continues today.
Oracle began in 1977 as Software Development Laboratories when the concept of the relational database grabbed the attention of Larry Ellison.
Through collaboration and team effort, the company developed a database for the CIA. That database was named Oracle. Later, the decision was made to name the company for the product.
Oracle first appeared on the Forbes top 500 list in 1996.
By that time, row-level locking had been introduced to allow multiple users to work in the same table. Hot backups allowed users to continue working while data archiving took place. PL/SQL allowed users to process data while it remained in the database.
Additionally, applications were being added to the lineup.
By 1996, Oracle 7 was out, capable of managing many types of data – text, video, maps, sound, or images.
The accumulation of these products, attention to business needs and leadership in innovation are what earned them this place on the list and has kept them there ever since.
Oracle’s success is based on the work of its founders, Larry Ellison and his team, and their belief in encouraging collaboration, experimentation and innovation within the company,
and in the efforts of many talented technical and business professionals.
Oracle’s contribution to the world of technology began with the relational database. The continued development of that database has led to one innovation after another, including online transaction processing. Applications rewritten for client/server environments helped to automate business processes.
Numerous acquisitions and mergers with other top companies such as Java and Sun Systems has added products, services and talent to the mix.
In addition to the most recent database release, there are Oracle applications, servers, engineered systems, middleware, services, storage
and cloud solutions. These products bring meaningful solutions to just about any type of business.
There are applications for Healthcare, Financial Services, Retail, Manufacturing, Airlines and Supply Chains, to name a few.
Oracle’s strategic plan can best be described by the motto:
Accelerate Innovation by Simplifying IT
One of the most important concepts at Oracle is the simplification of IT.
They are dedicated to eliminating IT complexity, and thereby encouraging innovation.
For Oracle’s customers, this means they can choose the package that suits their needs – from on-premises systems to cloud applications, application integration, advanced security, scalability and powerful performance. (History)
In addition to providing business with solutions for every process, Oracle has taken on responsibilities in other areas. The company has established education grants, technology and certification programs, Oracle Academy and Oracle University.
For those looking for a career, Oracle offers internships, training programs for injured veterans and college recruiting.
The company also fosters Corporate Citizenship – a culture of corporate social responsibility.
As stated in their website, “At Oracle we foster an inclusive environment that leverages the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of all our employees, suppliers, customers and partners to drive a sustainable global competitive advantage.”
