21. Majors
Typically one-fourth to three-fourths of your degree
When selecting a major, consider…
◦ What are you interested in?
◦ What are you passionate about?
◦ What activities/skills come naturally to you?
◦ What courses did you like in high school?
◦ What do you NOT like to study/do?
Why?
Workbook pgs. 2-3
22. Exploring Majors
Recent data indicates only 13% of new students
think they will change their major, but…
More than 1/3 of UF students change majors
by the end of their first year
More than 1/2 of UF students change majors
by the end of their sophomore year
•…and that’s ok!
• Can be “Exploratory” for the first 3 fall/spring terms
Workbook pg. 1
23. Tracking
Requirements for each major that guide students
toward graduation
3 Components of “Critical Tracking”
1. Required Overall GPA (some Colleges go by
UFGPA; others go by GPA in all college courses)
2. Required Major Courses (a.k.a. pre-professional
courses or critical tracking courses)
3. Required GPA in Critical Tracking Courses
(usually counts ALL attempts of tracking courses)
Guide to Majors
Please open your provided Newspapers to the “Marketing” major!
24. Staying “On-Track”
If you are “off-track” for one semester,
you will receive a hold and have to meet
with your advisor to discuss getting back
on-track
If you are off-track for a second semester,
you must change your major
25. Pre-Health and Pre-Law
• Pre-Health is NOT a major
• You can pursue any major while completing your
pre-health prerequisite coursework.
• Pre-Health = Pre-Medicine, Pre-Veterinary, Pre-
Dental, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Pharmacy and so many
more!
• Interested? Attend the pre-health session
• Pre-Law is NOT a major
• You can pursue any major while you are at UF
• No prerequisite coursework
Workbook pgs. 11-12
