Majors
 Typically one-fourth to three-fourths of your degree
 When selecting a major, consider…
◦ What are you interested in?
◦ What are you passionate about?
◦ What activities/skills come naturally to you?
◦ What courses did you like in high school?
◦ What do you NOT like to study/do?
 Why?
Workbook pgs. 2-3
Exploring Majors
 Recent data indicates only 13% of new students
think they will change their major, but…
More than 1/3 of UF students change majors
by the end of their first year
More than 1/2 of UF students change majors
by the end of their sophomore year
•…and that’s ok!
• Can be “Exploratory” for the first 3 fall/spring terms
Workbook pg. 1
Tracking
 Requirements for each major that guide students
toward graduation
 3 Components of “Critical Tracking”
1. Required Overall GPA (some Colleges go by
UFGPA; others go by GPA in all college courses)
2. Required Major Courses (a.k.a. pre-professional
courses or critical tracking courses)
3. Required GPA in Critical Tracking Courses
(usually counts ALL attempts of tracking courses)
Guide to Majors
Please open your provided Newspapers to the “Marketing” major!
Staying “On-Track”
 If you are “off-track” for one semester,
you will receive a hold and have to meet
with your advisor to discuss getting back
on-track
 If you are off-track for a second semester,
you must change your major
Pre-Health and Pre-Law
• Pre-Health is NOT a major
• You can pursue any major while completing your
pre-health prerequisite coursework.
• Pre-Health = Pre-Medicine, Pre-Veterinary, Pre-
Dental, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Pharmacy and so many
more!
• Interested? Attend the pre-health session
• Pre-Law is NOT a major
• You can pursue any major while you are at UF
• No prerequisite coursework
Workbook pgs. 11-12
General Education Requirements
Some Colleges will redistribute certain Gen.Ed. credits
Grade of “C” or better is required for Gen.Eds!
*N & D are always paired with another Gen.Ed.
Credits Gen.Ed. Area Code
3 Composition C
6 Mathematics M
9 Humanities (including HUM2305) H
9 Social & Behavioral Sciences S
9 Physical and Biological Sciences P and B
3 International N*
3 Diversity D*
Workbook pg. 4
HUM 2305: What is the Good Life
 Required course for all incoming freshmen
 Will count for 3 credits of GE-Humanities
 Content:
◦ Exploring cross-cultural perspectives
◦ How to make ethical and well-informed life
choices
◦ Out of class experiences (museum exhibits and
performances)
State Requirements
 Writing Requirement (WM)
◦ 24,000 words – courses available with 2,000, 4,000
or 6,000 words denoted by WM: 6
◦ Earn a “C” or better and successful completion of
writing portion
 Summer Term Enrollment
◦ Must take at least 9 credits of summer courses at a
four-year, State University System institution
Electives
 Electives are courses taken in addition to your major or other
specific requirements needed for your degree
 Can come from any subject area or department
 Electives can be used to…
◦ Fulfill pre-requisites for upper-level courses
◦ Explore majors, careers, or pre-health interests
◦ Explore minors or certificates
◦ Gain experience (such as study abroad or internships)
◦ Develop skills (such as communication, ethics, computer)
 Use page 7 to fill in backup credits such as electives
and Gen Eds for when you register tomorrow! (Req)
Workbook pg. 7
Incoming Exam Credit
 UF Awards credit for:
◦ AP: scores of 3 or higher
◦ IB: scores of 4 or higher
◦ AICE: scores of A-E
 A maximum of 45 credits may be granted by combining
AP/IB/AICE
 These credits MAY count for major/critical tracking,
general education or the State Writing Requirement
 Credit charts can be found in your Preview Workbook
 All predicted incoming credit will be accepted EXCEPT
mathematics and chemistry
Workbook pgs. 19-21
Dual Enrollment Credit
 From a Florida public Community College, State
College, or University:
◦ Common Course Numbering System:
 AMH1010 elsewhere = AMH2010 at UF
 PSY1012 elsewhere = PSY2012 at UF
 From an out-of-state or private institution:
◦ Will count towards UF degree if accredited
◦ Meet with an Academic Advisor from your College or
Department to evaluate each course individually
Math and Chemistry Placement
 Math Placement
◦ Applies to Science/Engineering/Business majors and Pre-
Health
◦ ALEKS exam
◦ Preview Workbook (page 8)
 Chemistry Placement for CHM 2045 or CHM 2095
◦ Applies to Science and Engineering majors and Pre-Health
◦ Preview Workbook (page 9)
 You can use confirmed incoming credit to help you place into
Calculus 1 and General Chemistry 1 but ALEKS is the best
predictor of success!
Workbook pgs. 8-9
Planning Your Schedule
 Most Summer B students are going to take
2-3 courses (6-7 credits)
 Students enrolling in the Fall take about 4-
6 courses (12-15 credits)
Components of a Schedule
 Critical Tracking Courses (use Guide-to-Majors)
◦ Take critical tracking courses that explore multiple majors
◦ Meet Semester 1 Tracking? Look ahead! (if appropriate)
 General Education Requirements (pages 22-27)
◦ Use Gen.Eds to explore topics/issues you’re interested in
◦ Know what you have credit for (or think you will)
 Electives (pages 7 & 22-28)
◦ Pursue interests, explore minors, develop skills
◦ Consider taking SLS1102 – First Year Florida
Workbook pg.14
