HETEROGENEITY AND (LACK OF) INTEROPERABILITY
Heterogeneity of standard protocols, APIs, device models
and data interchange formats hamper interoperability in IoT.
SECURITY AND SAFETY
Autonomous actuation in IoT systems calls for stricter
security requirements.
Many IoT-based products are implemented with low
awareness of potential security risks and lack of basic state-
of-the-art security mechanisms.
BUSINESS MODELS COLLIDING WITH LONG-TERM
RESILIENCE AND SURVIVABILITY OF IOT SERVICES
Many IoT solutions on the market adopt fully centralized,
cloud-oriented approaches but singular point of failures
makes survivability and resiliency features difficult to be
granted in the long term.
IMPLEMENTING “SMART BEHAVIOURS” IN OPEN
COLLABORATION CONTEXT
Difficulty to generically “bind” AI and ML solutions to
general-purpose concrete IoT and CPS platforms and to
make them collaborate together for common tasks.
ENFORCEMENT OF PRIVACY AND DATA
OWNERSHIP POLICIES
A comprehensive solution able to give back control of
privacy aspects to users is still missing.
MARKET FRAGMENTATION AND INCUMBENCY OF
LARGE PLAYERS
IoT platforms focused on specific application domain or
associated with technology stacks.
Market segments such as cloud-based IoT platforms are
dominated by few, often non-EU, players, which hamper the
potential business opportunities for EU companies.

The viability of the proposed approaches is demonstrated in two futuristic usage
scenarios, namely Service Robotics and Critical Infrastructure Management, as well as
through a series of proof-of-concept demonstrations in collaboration with on-going IoT
large-scale pilot initiatives.
SCENARIOS
The Service Robotics use case will involve
several robotic platforms, like the open-
source Robotics Operating System (ROS),
which need to collaborate to scan a given
warehouse and to assist humans in a
logistics domain.
The Critical Water Infrastructure
Monitoring and Control use case focuses
on the management of the water urban
cycle in metropolitan environment of
Coruña.
In addition to the first two usage
scenarios, few other scenarios will be
derived creating a link with European IoT
Large Scale Pilots where BRAIN-IoT
partners are involved in.

➢ Identification of security and privacy functionalities and requirements of common
interest.
➢ Promoting the adoption of interoperable solutions – possibly supporting preliminary
steps towards standardization endeavours.
➢ Sharing outcome of the analysis on blockchain technologies also through the
organization of workshops.
➢ Sharing knowledge for the full understanding of the current EU regulations in terms of
privacy and security (General Data Protection Regulation).
➢ Sharing outcome of risks analysis to build a complete list of threats and
vulnerabilities on IoT systems in order to accelerate future risk analysis on IoT
environments.

  • 3. 3 Brain-IoT focuses on complex scenarios, involving smart autonomous actuation and characterized by stricter requirements in terms of dependability, security, privacy and safety constraints, resulting in convergence between heterogeneous IoT Platforms and Cyber Physical Systems (CPS). PROJECT FOCUS - OPEN ISSUES IN IOT DOMAIN 4 Bruxelles, 20/03/2018CLUSTER WORKSHOP HETEROGENEITY AND (LACK OF) INTEROPERABILITY Heterogeneity of standard protocols, APIs, device models and data interchange formats hamper interoperability in IoT. SECURITY AND SAFETY Autonomous actuation in IoT systems calls for stricter security requirements. Many IoT-based products are implemented with low awareness of potential security risks and lack of basic state- of-the-art security mechanisms. BUSINESS MODELS COLLIDING WITH LONG-TERM RESILIENCE AND SURVIVABILITY OF IOT SERVICES Many IoT solutions on the market adopt fully centralized, cloud-oriented approaches but singular point of failures makes survivability and resiliency features difficult to be granted in the long term. IMPLEMENTING “SMART BEHAVIOURS” IN OPEN COLLABORATION CONTEXT Difficulty to generically “bind” AI and ML solutions to general-purpose concrete IoT and CPS platforms and to make them collaborate together for common tasks. ENFORCEMENT OF PRIVACY AND DATA OWNERSHIP POLICIES A comprehensive solution able to give back control of privacy aspects to users is still missing. MARKET FRAGMENTATION AND INCUMBENCY OF LARGE PLAYERS IoT platforms focused on specific application domain or associated with technology stacks. Market segments such as cloud-based IoT platforms are dominated by few, often non-EU, players, which hamper the potential business opportunities for EU companies.

Bruxelles, 20/03/2018CLUSTER WORKSHOP 5 OBJECTIVES • Fully de-centralized, composable and dynamic federations of heterogeneous IoT platforms. • Adoption of shared semantic models, dynamically linked to concrete IoT devices (sensors, actuators, controls, etc.). • Facilitates the deployment of smart cooperative behavior realized by means of modular Artificial Intelligence features which can be dynamically deployed to heterogeneous IoT devices in mixed edge/cloud IoT environments. • To establish Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) in dynamic, distributed IoT scenarios. • Solutions to embed privacy- awareness and privacy control features in IoT solutions. • Dynamic commissioning and reconfiguration choosing among available platforms, modules implementations and services, along with edge- cloud balancing. • Dynamic configuration of the IoT component deployment between edge and cloud. Bruxelles, 20/03/2018CLUSTER WORKSHOP 8 The viability of the proposed approaches is demonstrated in two futuristic usage scenarios, namely Service Robotics and Critical Infrastructure Management, as well as through a series of proof-of-concept demonstrations in collaboration with on-going IoT large-scale pilot initiatives. SCENARIOS The Service Robotics use case will involve several robotic platforms, like the open- source Robotics Operating System (ROS), which need to collaborate to scan a given warehouse and to assist humans in a logistics domain. The Critical Water Infrastructure Monitoring and Control use case focuses on the management of the water urban cycle in metropolitan environment of Coruña. In addition to the first two usage scenarios, few other scenarios will be derived creating a link with European IoT Large Scale Pilots where BRAIN-IoT partners are involved in. Bruxelles, 20/03/2018CLUSTER WORKSHOP 9 ➢ Identification of security and privacy functionalities and requirements of common interest. ➢ Promoting the adoption of interoperable solutions – possibly supporting preliminary steps towards standardization endeavours. ➢ Sharing outcome of the analysis on blockchain technologies also through the organization of workshops. ➢ Sharing knowledge for the full understanding of the current EU regulations in terms of privacy and security (General Data Protection Regulation). ➢ Sharing outcome of risks analysis to build a complete list of threats and vulnerabilities on IoT systems in order to accelerate future risk analysis on IoT environments.
