2. MY CHOSEN
GENRE
The genre I have chosen to work on is
pop rock and have been specifically
interested in James Blunt. The song I
have chosen is Bones by James Blunt
because it outlines a good narrative
that I can work with. Other song’s I
have considered within the pop rock
genre was Train songs like mermaid,
drive by, 50 ways to say goodbye,
angel in blue jeans and bruises. They
all carry a narrative and the style of
song I am interested in. For example in
the music video angel in blue jeans
there is this man played by Danny
Trejo who is hopelessly in love with
this woman which links with my
concept.
3. MUSIC VIDEO IDEA / CONCEPT
The song starts up with a little instrumental which I thought of having a general wide angle, tracking shot of
the main character Sam cycling down a path on top of a hill really early in the morning by himself in winter.
The whole of the story he cycles and the music video keeps jumping from him cycling to his memories of this
girl he loves. He is on his way to this girls house and is defying all the odds of making the journey which is
traitorous but he would do it for her. After accomplishing all the obstacles and beating the odds her gets to
place she always is round to sit and draw. He see’s her and as he get’s off his bike and walks towards her, she
drops her notebook with all her drawing’s into the river, so he jumps in and swim’s after them eventually
collecting them and as he is about to give them to her it’s a drawing of his and her names surrounded by love
hearts. They look up at each other smile, hold hand’s then walk off into the fading sunset. As they walk off
your hear his voice saying “I always knew you liked me”.
4. CONCEPT CONTINUED
In my music video I also plan
to have a mix of different
camera angles and types.
The cycling “chase” part of
my scene will be filmed using
a go pro hero 4 silver camera
to get a action shot of what
the main artist Sam is
experiencing and going to use
the Go Pro to achieve
different shot’s a regular
camera can’t achieve. For
example I can do multiple
crane shot’s with this small
camera and I shall also be
able to film within water
because it is water proof. So
I can mange to get Sam diving
into the river to save the
sketch pad up close and
personal giving my music
video an extra dimension you
cannot achieve with a normal
camera.
5. THE DIFFERENT
FILMING PARTS
Within my video there is going to be two main
characters, the main singer (who is also the
guy madly in love with the girl) played by Sam,
and the girl of his dreams being played by “”.
The three different shoots :
1. Tracking bicycle shot, showing his journey
to the girl he loves.
2. The shot’s just of the girl doing general
activities that he remembers from the time
they spend together.
3. The final scene, where they see each other
at the place where she draws (place undecided
at this specific moment).
6. LYRICS
I have never been a beautiful boy.//
Never liked the sound of my own voice.//
I wasn’t cool when I was in my teens.//
I never slept, but I did have dreams.//
And as I step out in this big old world,//
Seven billion just trying to cope.//
And everyone of us some day will die but,
Today I’ve never felt more alive.//
Can you feel it coming?
Can you feel it coming?
Can you feel it, feel it, feel it,//
Running through your bones?//
Running through your bones.//
Yeah, you set my heart on fire,
And it’s all hard-wired to my bones.//
I can count all the things I fear.//
I close my eyes but they don’t disappear.//
If there’s a God then there’s a guarantee,//
But if there’s not it’s just you and me.//
Can you feel it coming?
Can you feel it coming?
Can you feel it, feel it, feel it,//
Running through your bones?//
Running through your bones.//
Yeah, you set my heart on fire,
And it’s all hard-wired to my bones.//
So kiss me before the sun falls down.
Run before your legs give way.
Swallow it all till you drown.
(QUICK VERSE)
Can you feel it coming?
Can you feel it coming?
Can you feel it, feel it, feel it,//
Running through your bones?//
Running through your bones.//
Yeah, you set my heart on fire,
And it’s all hard-wired to my bones.//
Running through my bones.//
Yeah, you set my heart on fire,
And it’s all hard-wired to my bones.//
Running through my bones.//
Running through my bones.//
7. TARGET
AUDIENCE
My Artist Sam Jowett is
going to be constructed in
the same way as James
Blunt, he is going to be
constructed as a pop/rock
artist with a style very
similar to James blunt. He
is going to appeal
teenagers to young adults
which is going to be shown
by his style of clothing and
him being quite young
would obviously appeal to
a younger audience. The
song is very pop rock so
may appeal to a wider
audience because it is a
very popular genre but Sam
will be targeted for a
younger audience. Sam will
be targeted towards
females more to make him
look desirable, the kind of
artist teenage girls will put
his poster up on their wall.
8. INFLUENCES
My influences for this music video was generally the music by pop rock
bands and artists like Train and James Blunt. I have done a lot of research
into all the different genre’s including rock, hip – hop, indie and RnB and
watched music videos to see the genres iconography but I specifically liked
the pop genre with it’s bright up beat songs and love song stories. Watching
music videos like Trains – Bruises ft. Ashley Monroe and Ed Sheeran/ Taylor
Swifts song Everything has changed had a very interesting narrative of
telling a love story which influenced my decision into choosing to create a
pop love story music video. Also many romantic comedies influenced me to
do a “love song”. Things like the How I Met Your Mother series encouraged
because they always have story lines about relationships and I felt this
song would be good for that type of story.
9. ANDREW GOODWIN’S
CONVENTIONS
Andrew Goodwin’s conventions I shall be using are:
1. Close Up’s
2. Intertextuality
3. Relationship between the music and the visuals
4. Pop Rock Genre Style
10. CLOSE UP
I shall use the use of
close up’s within my
music video to create an
intimate relationship
between the audience
and the artist. It will the
audience to have
sympathy for the artist
and become “friends”
with him. Also the use of
close ups can show the
expression in his face to
show how he is feeling
and how the audience
should also be feeling at
that time. The use of
the changing of focus
will also show what the
audience should be
looking at front the
artists perspective. It
will give a good effect
and add depth to my
music video.
11. INTERTEXUALITY
I am going to use intertextuality
to interlink my influences which
made me want to do this song.
The series “How I Met Your
Mother” influenced me to do a
romantic but yet up beat song.
So I shall drop in some
references to this series within
my music video by visuals.
12. LINK BETWEEN THE MUSIC
AND THE VISUALS
This song “Bones” has
different points in the
song of having a fast
tempo and a slow tempo.
The tune in the verses are
a lot slower which is
where I would do long
running shots with
memories of her whereas
in the upbeat chorus I will
do quick edits with many
different shots of Sam
making the journey to her
on his bike. As the song
has the last chorus he will
jump into the river in a
frantic panic to save the
book which will be upbeat
like the tempo of the
song. The song shall
finish and be silent when
the last shot is taken
which will be still and
silent linking the music
with the visuals.
13. POP ROCK MUSIC GENRE
The Pop Genre follows loads of different aspects depending
on the song. For example a love song like Bones will be
different to the Roar by Katy Perry. For example rock has
stand out aspects to show it is rock, like having guitars
drums, being dark and mainly the main artists don’t have a
top on to show off their tattoos. Whereas the pop music
genre has a range of iconography that could apply to many
different genres, but after watching many pop rock music
videos based on love I have found certain things that show
up. For example in the Train music video of bruises, it shows
a journey from the start to the finish in a way that is happy
but also meaningful at the same time. The song being about
people being “bruised” has a surprisingly happy vibe and is
one of the iconography’s of the pop rock music genre.
