As part of our Inquiry Structures topic, we chose a structure, collected interesting facts and built a mini model (some not so mini) We are all so proud!!
2. KJ’s Eden Park
Eden Park is the largest stadium in New
Zealand. In the 1900’s it use to be a swamp!
3. JB’s Tyne Bridge
Everyone thinks that the Sydney Harbour bridge copied the Tyne
Bridge, but the Tyne Bridge copied the Sydney Harbour Bridge and
finished first!
4. LL’s Beehive
A Scottish architect Sir Basil Spence designed the Beehive in 1964. The
top floor is occupied by the cabinet room with the Prime Minister’s
offices on the 9th floor.
5. IY’s Twisting Tower- Dubai
The building began in February 2006 and it has 73 stories, it twists around
all different ways. The architects were CANYAN , Skidmore and Owens &
Merrill.
6. CB’s The Serena Hotel in
Africa.
The Serena company has
over 7 hotels in each
country around the world.!
The Serena company was
first founded in the 1980’s.
7. GB’s Taj Mahal
Legend has it that Shan Jahan
had planned to construct
another Taj Mahal in black
marble on the other side of
the river. But the war with his
son interrupted his plans.
The Taj Mahal appears pink in
the morning, white in the day
and changes its colour to
golden in moonlight.
8. CB’s Auckland Sky tower
Location is Auckland, Auckland City
New Zealand.
Construction was completed in 1997.
It was designed by Craig Moller LTD
and built by Fletcher Construction.
Structural Engineers Becca Group.
The tower was built as a
communication and observation
tower.
Maximum height is 328 metres at the
antenna spire.
9. CP’s Fort Fredrick South
Africa- Port Elizabeth
The Fort Fredrick was built
in 1799 to protect the people
in Port Elizabeth from the
French troops in the
harbour, During the
Napoleonic wars. When
British occupations of the
colony first occurred.
10. SL’s The Oriental Pearl
Tower- China
The Oriental Pearl Tower is in
Shanghai, China. At 468m it is
the third tallest TV and Radio
Tower.
It was designed by the
Shanghai Modern
Architectural Design Co. Ltd.
Principal designers are Jiang
Huan Chen, Lin Benlin and
Zhang Xiulin.
Construction began in 1990
and was completed in 1994.
11. DL’s The Forbidden City
The Forbidden city is in
China, it has 980
building inside it. It has
many art galleries.
When the Emperor gets
married he must stay
there in a special
building for 3 nights
before he gets to the
Emperor building.
12. GM’s Sydney Opera House
The Opera house has
more than 1000 rooms!
It took 14 years to build.
The concert hall is the
biggest hall and can seat
up to 2678 people at the
same time.
The roof has 1056000
tiles imported from
Sweden. It was opened
by the Queen in 1973.
13. AP’s Tower Bridge- London
England
The Tower Bridge is a suspension
bridge on the river Thames in London
England.
It was built from 1884-1886 and
opened to the public in 1894.
Sir Horace Jones designed the bridge.
The Tower Bridge walkway was closed
due to suicides and robberies but re
opened in 2002.
Tall masted ships were able to pass
when the bridge is open.
This is another reason why it was built.
14. RZ’s Bank of China Tower
Bank of China Tower was the
tallest building in Asia and
the tallest building outside
the USA at the time the
construction started.
A small sky deck is open to
the public on the 42nd floor.
The architect was Leohn
Ming Pei who is best known
in Europe for his
transformation of the Louvre
in Paris.
15. CR’s ASB BANK!
New Zealand’s first savings bank
the Auckland Savings Bank
opened at 7pm on Saturday the
5th of June in 1847.
It was located in Queen Street
Auckland.

16. CS’s Sky Tower
The Sky Tower has the SKY JUMP
at 192 metres from the
observation deck!
It has two restaurants and a café.
One of the restaurants revolves
360 degrees!
The Sky Tower is the 12th tallest
tower in the world!
The Tower is Part of the Sky City
Auckland Casino Complex.
17. HM’s Kaabah in Saudi Arabia
It is at the centre of the
Earth.
The black cloth over the
Kaabah is called the
Qiswa.
The current height of the
Kaabah is 39 feet and 6
inches.
18. DA’s Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is
in the city of Pisa, Italy.
The construction of the
tower began in 1173 and was
completed in the 14th
century in 1399.
The original completed
height was 60 metres
although the actual height is
56.67metres on the highest
side and 55.86metres on the
lowest side.
There are 297 steps from the
bottom to the top.
19. JS’s Eden Park
It was used for the Rugby World
cup 2011 games and final. Last
year I went to see the All Blacks
play South Africa in the Tri
Nations Game. The All Blacks won
32-12.
I sometimes go to Eden Park to
see the Blues.
Eden Park is NZ’s largest stadium.
At first it was a swamp but the
water was drained away.
It is used for sports such as
cricket, league and rugby.
20. NH’s Thien Mu Pagoda
It was built in 1601.
There is a legend about
an old woman that once
appeared on a hill and
said that a lord would
come and build a
temple. It was built in
Vietnam. The location is
the north bank of the
Perfume River in Hue.
21. Ah’s BIG BEN!
Big Ben is in London, England.
Big Ben weighs 14 ton on its
own which is the same as a
small elephant!
Big Ben is a nick name for
Great Bell of the Clock.
To get to the top of Big Ben
you have to climb 334 stairs!
It is 443 feet and 16 stories
high!
There are also 4 small bells
inside Big Ben that ring every
¼ hour intervals.
22. JG’s London Eye
The London Eye is in London,
England. It takes 30 minutes per
rotation and travels at a speed of
0.9kms per hour. It allows
passengers to step on and off
without the wheel stopping.
On clear day you can see 40 kms.
The London Eye took 7 years and
people from 5 countries to build.
It is 135 metres high, it is the
tallest ferris wheel in Europe and
the 4th Tallest building in London.
