Commercial can help with your material choices. There are a number of factors to consider in making a smart choice for your cylinder rod requirements.One factor that continues to increase in importance is Salt Spray properties or Corrosion resistance. In the US it is common to use ASTM B117 Neutral Salt Spray testing to give a fair comparison between various products. ASTM B117 is the specification that lays out how the material is to be tested. Getting a complete picture the material needs to be rated to see how well the sample holds up in a test chamber. ASTM B537 gives this option starting with a rating 10 which is no corrosion to the un-aided eye. So a complete snapshot of a material should consist of ASTM B117 followed by the ASTM B537 rating or similar rating standard.Mechanical properties are also an important part of rod selection. Mechanicals are usually expressed in cylinder rods as minimum yield strengths. But other factors could include charpy impact properties, dent resistance, elongation and reduction of area are also properties that need to be considered.Availability is another factor to consider when selecting material. Is the ideal rod for your cylinder application available or is this a special. Time and cost will also play an important role.Removal rates, machine and weld factors also need to be addressed. Can this rod be welded? Is the material easy to machine?Total cost. What is the cost of the base material. What is the total cost to machine the rod ready for assembly. Some material may have a lower base material cost but with processing and machining may realize a higher finished cost per part.
Looking at Corrosion Resistance as a primary factor. The following materials are ranked from most cost effective to least cost effective.Actual field life, mechanical properties also need to be considered in a final material selection. But looking at cost versus corrosion resistance ChromeXL gives the best overall performance!Standard CPO and IHC do not typically come with a Salt Spray Ratings. However this is the most common material and is readily available. Typical salt spray ratings for this type of product can range from 24 to 96 hours and can vary widely from bar to bar and even from one end to the opposite end results can vary. This type of product offers no corrosion guarantee.ChromeXL or Chrome extended Life is offered through Commercial Fluid Power partnered with Industrial Hard Chrome. This is the next most cost effective rod. The ChromeXL is tested and rated to 1000 hours. By carefully controlling the base material and finishing steps. Industrial Hard Chrome has been able to offer a guaranteed performance up to 1200 hours. This is a special product and would require minimum mill commitments.Nitro-tuff rod. This rod offers a 150 hour guarantee tested in a NSS application. As with any rod that is tested in a salt spray chamber this is a gage of how well a product will stand up versus a similar product in the same environment. Actually field performance is the best test. This product is readily available in standard imperial sizes through 3.500”. Larger sizes can be produced as specials.Nickel/Chrome. Commercial Fluid Power does not stock a nickel chrome plated product. We can compete with larger sizes and small lot quantities. Typical guarantee for this product is 1000 hours and is sold throughout the US as a stock item through Scot Industries. This is typically several times more expensive the standard chrome plated bar but generally less costly than chrome plated stainless on larger diameters. On smaller diameters chrome plated stainless can be more cost effective. Plated Stainless Steel would be the most costly category. This would include chrome plated and nickel chrome plated. Commercial does carry a select few chrome plated shafts. Typical salt spray is 1000 hours plus but is not normally tested.Ceramic coatings can offer extended corrosion resistance in extreme environments. These are always specials and can be costly and can be easily damaged in handling if proper measured are not followed due to being brittle in nature.

ChromeXL the most corrosion resistant bar available. ASTM B117 is a neutral salt spray test. 1000 Hours is just short of 42 days. There is a much more aggressive corrosion test covered by ASTM B368 or CASS test which is 3 to 4 times more aggressive than NSS. Because of time constraints material is often tested using this CASS.ASTM B368 is the test procedures for Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid-Salt Spray (CASS) testing for specification purposes. The standard does not specify the type of test specimen or exposure periods to be used for a specific product, nor the interpretation to be given to the results.Salt spray testing is popular because it is cheap, quick, well standardized and reasonably repeatable. There is, however, only a weak correlation between the duration in salt spray test and the expected life of a coating, since corrosion is a very complicated process and can be influenced by many external factors. Nevertheless, salt spray test is widely used in the industrial sector for the evaluation of corrosion resistance of finished surfaces or parts.
