Background
 Shrimp Farming in Indonesia is important for economic
growth ( national food security & export), Potential
area 2 million hectares.
 But it faces many environmental challenges. Since
earlier 1990s, there has been continues decrease in
production due to disease outbreak.
 Other major problems identified in small-scale brackish
water aquaculture:
• Environmental conditions are not well suited for
aquaculture (mainly acid sulfate soils, peat soils
and sandy sediments)
• Farm management factors (insufficient water
supply, ponds dug too deep and cannot be drained
out, brackish water supply, algal blooms)

 Detail knowledge of environmental and farm management
constraints is critical to solve production problems and how
limitations can be managed.
 FAO Expert Workshop in Rome, Italy 19–21 November 2008
has proposed the use of spatial planning tools including
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and
mapping as an essential element for data management,
analysis, modelling and decision-making in aquaculture.
 Practical implementation of the Spatial Planning Tools relating
to aquaculture needs can be a big challenge The processes,
methods, type of information and visualization?
 Case studies : focused only on coastal land based/brackish
water aquaculture (BA)

Summary
• To ensure a maximum adoption of EO products
and analysis by spatial environmental planners
and aquaculture stakeholders, we must take into
account : practicality, accuracy & simplicity
• The successful application/adoption of EO data or
products will very much depend on the
stakeholders or potential beneficiary needs
• Poor understanding of the technology (both
strength and limitations) could be solved by
providing of training to local coastal/marine
spatial planners, scientists, NGOs etc.

"Supporting Blue Growth with innovative applications based on EU e-infrastructures”, 14-15 February 2018, Brussels Background  Shrimp Farming in Indonesia is important for economic growth ( national food security & export), Potential area 2 million hectares.  But it faces many environmental challenges. Since earlier 1990s, there has been continues decrease in production due to disease outbreak.  Other major problems identified in small-scale brackish water aquaculture: • Environmental conditions are not well suited for aquaculture (mainly acid sulfate soils, peat soils and sandy sediments) • Farm management factors (insufficient water supply, ponds dug too deep and cannot be drained out, brackish water supply, algal blooms)
