Medicine should store seperetly other than main
pharmacy.
Medicine with high demand and emergency drug should
always kept stock for provide any time.
A well-arranged store enables easy identification of drugs
and saves time when picking up drug from the shelves.
There should be separate storage room and dispensing
pharmacy.
The practice of dispensing drugs should not be done from
the main store, but the drugs for certain time (1 day, 1
week, 1 month etc) are taken to the dispensary from the
store.
There should be receiving section &distribution section in
store office.
3. Objectives of good medical store management
To guarantee a continuous supply of drugs in medical
stores,
To maintain integrity of packaging and to guarantee
quality and potency of drugs during shelf life
To minimize losses from expiration, deterioration or
contamination
To control theft and pilferage,
To keep accurate inventory records,
To provide stock movement information
To use transport means efficiently.
To prevent infestation of pests and vermin.
4. Storage environment
Adequate temperature,
Sufficient lighting.
Clean conditions,
Humidity control,
Cold storage facilities,
Appropriate placement
The store room must be cleaned daily and mopped at
least once a week.
5. Stock rotation
In this system earliest expiration date in front or on top
and those with the latest expiration in the back or
below of a shelf, so the drugs and related items with
earliest expiration date get dispensed first, and those
with the latest expiration get dispensed later.
The following points should be taken into account:
a) Remove regularly all the expired items from the store
and check for near-to- expiry drugs which cannot be
used completely.
b) Mark all containers & boxes with the expiration date
of the drug.
c) Arrange stock according to FEFO (first expiry first
out) to allow stock rotation.
