Topic : Eklavya: as a tragic hero.
Submitted To : Department Of English
What kind of character is tragic hero ?
Aristotle agrees with the condition
of – “Rather Good Man” as ideal
tragic hero who comes to bad end
with an ideal situations.
•Nishadha boy who belong
to Bhal community.
•Son of Vyatraj
Harinyadhary.
•Aimbition to be the best
archer .
Guru Drona’s refusal to Eklavya:
1. Guru Drona teaches only to princes
“ Indian caste & creed system where a
talented person is not equally seen.”
2. Though he has impersonal Purpose to
learn archery & has also quality but he
can’t because of his belonging.
3. Guru promise Arjuna that he becomes him
the best Archer of the world.
( Partiality)
 Fast learner than Arjuna.
 Even though ,he learns himself he embarked
upon a programme of self –study in presence
of clay image of Guru Drona.
 He achieves a level of superiority in archery
than Arjuna.
 He has no hunger of fame but his aim was the
welfare of helpless fawns residing in forest.
In short , he has noble purpose to learn
archery.
Seeing his Guru’s dilemma,
Eklavya willingly gives his
‘Right Hand Thumb’ as Daxina
to Guru Drona.
He has to pay fee because of his
aimbition to learn archery.
He becomes a ‘Scapegoat’ of
dominated of caste hierarchy.
 Though he has quality he becomes helpless
character in whole play.
 Belonging to the lower class he becomes
victim of domain society.
 The loyal Eklavya cripples himself, and he
himself reducing his ability as in archer.
 Eklavya faces all the problems and comes out
with flying colors and emerge as the tragic
hero of the play – ‘ The Purpose’
Because of his own Error of judgement ,
he becomes the tragic hero of the play.
Because of his
sacrifices
Arjuna
becomes the
best archer of
the world.
Only because of his own Error Of Judgment,
he suffers a lot .Taking suddenly decision to
give Daxina leads him his tragic end because
no one can take his responsibilities to save his
innocence animal niether Guru Drona nor
Arjuna.
Being a common man Eklavya
suffers a lot . He faces all problems
and comes out with flying color
and emerges as the tragic hero of
the play: “ The Purpose” by T.P.
Kailasam.
