What is Communication
Communication is an act of sharing or exchanging information , ideas
or feelings with others.
History of Communication
Early humans used hand
signals, sounds and
facial expressions to
communicate
They developed symbols
(called Hieroglyphics) to
represent sound and
words.
Paper was invented in
AD 105 and people
started writing on paper.
People started writing
on clay tablets, papyrus
sheets, bark of trees and
skins of animals
They started drawing
and painting.
Johannes Gutenburg of
Germany invented the
printing press . The Bible
was the first book that
was printed .
The development of
printing made the mass
communication
possible.
Types of Communication
There are four types of communication – Verbal communication , Visual
Communication , Non-Verbal Communication and Written Communication .

• Verbal communication , Visual Communication , Non-Verbal
Communication and Written Communication can also be divided in
two types- Individual Communication and Mass Communication.
1. Individual Communication is the communication done between
only two people. For example – talking face to face , telephone ,
eye contact etc.
2. Mass Communication is the communication done over a large
number of people . For example- radio , newspaper , magazine
television etc.
Ways of Communication
Many means of
communication are
available today and they
have made our life more
faster and easier. For
example postal service,
telephone, intercom, fax,
internet, email, radio,
newspaper and magazines,
television, cinema etc.

In the last slide we learnt
about different means of
communication and
today we will talk about-
Telephone
Intercom
Fax
Radio
Continued
1. Telephone - A telephone is a communication tool.
Originally it was an electric tool transmitting
analogue speech along wires. Now it is an electronic
tool sending digital signals on wires or radio
transmission. Using a telephone, two people who
are in different places can talk to each other.
2. Intercom - An intercom (intercommunication device)
is a stand-alone voice communication system for
use within a building or small collection of buildings,
functioning independently of the public telephone
network.
Continued
3. Fax – Fax (short for facsimile), sometimes called
telefax is the telephonic transmission of scanned
printed material (both text and images), normally to
a telephone number connected to a printer or other
output device.
4. Radio - The prime purpose of radio is to convey
information from one place to another through the
intervening media (i.e., air, space, nonconducting
materials) without wires. Besides being used for
transmitting sound and television signals, radio is
used for the transmission of data in coded form.
