Blending science and fiction, we reconstruct the soundscape of the mythical wilds where extinct bird species live and sing. The images of extinct birds we found are sonified (“voiced”) by a neural network, which has its own ideas about how birds sing. The sounds are heard in the darkness, which is a collection of all possible options for what the forest might have looked like when all these birds still lived on earth, or what it might look like in a hypothetical future, when we can forever forget how the birds sang.

In 2005 FOAM/ArtRadius and Saksala ArtRadius organized a sculpture symposium based on the theme reductive abstraction. During the last two decades it seems that art has been attempting to give itself more content by accumulation. Combinations of superfluous materials and styles have lead to a redundant art. But this apparent development is only an aspect of art as a whole. What is presented as contemporary or even avant-garde is only that which has temporarily in the spotlights of the museums and galleries. The marketing of art by too many fashion seeking art historians and art promoters is continuously aimed at creating new trends. This would not be so detrimental, if only they would realize that different art forms have to exist next to each other in order to stimulate and nourish each other. Letting the artists determine their development themselves seems to be too much to ask.

Magic Forest. 2002. Was made for the exhibition Head On in 2002, a show at the Science Museum on neurology and the brain. The work was produced in collaboration with Wellcome Foundation. The final work is a dream-like journey through a sea of developing neurones, expanding and expanding in number. The work was dependent on research about the Spanish anatomist Santiago Ramon Y Cahal and on the contemporary work of Dr Richard Wingate of the Medical Research Centre for Developmental Neurobiology, Kings College, London. Magic Forest was shown at the Science Museum, London in March 2002, at the Rotterdam Film Festival, Rotterdam, Holland, 2003 and at the Natuurmuseum, Rotterdam, a show called Mensbeeld, and the BA Science Festival, Exeter in 2004, in Simply Complex at the Design Museum in Zurich in 2005, in Neuroculture, at the Westport Art Centre, Connecticut, USA in 2006, in Brain Waves, Exit Art, New York, USA, 2008, in ‘Landscapes Of The Mind’, Williams College Museum Of Art, Williamstown, USA 2010, in ‘Fundamentaly Human’, Pera, Museum, Istanbul, Turkey in 2011, and in ‘Images Of The Mind’, The Moravian Gallery, (Moravská Galerie) Brno, Czech Republic in 2012, Gallery Babel, Trondheim Norway in 2014 and it will travel to, Daejeon Museum of Art, Daejeon South Korea in in November 2014. Plus plans are being made for Magic Forest to travel to the Science Festival in Edinburgh in 2015 Two articles have appeared in the journal Nature that talk about Magic Forest. A static version of the time-based piece is now based at the Wellcome Trust Building, in London.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
