3. Objectives:
1) Understand the importance of developing time
management skills
2) Learn how to prioritize tasks that are urgent,
important, or both.
3) Utilize strategies to help practice effective time
management.
We will utilize videos, worksheets, and communication to achieve these objectives.
3
5. What is it?
We live in a world where it is common to
have multiple tasks to complete that all
appear to need our immediate, undivided
attention.
But giving our undivided attention to many
different things at the same time is
virtually impossible.
1
6. What is it?
The real challenge of time management is
learning how to do priority management.
When faced with many different tasks, we
need to think about which task really
needs to be done first.
Which task is the most pressing priority? This
is true whether the setting is in our home,
at school, or at work.
1
7. “
⊹ Students that struggle with time
management are typically good
students who want to do a great
job but they underestimate how
much time a task will take.
7
8. Part of time management is making sure you
prioritize your schedule to arrive on time.
Whether you are at your job or in school, time management
remains a top priority because you have important tasks to
complete.
These tasks typically need to be completed within an expected
amount of time (assignment due dates, project timelines, etc.) and
with efficiency.
To work efficiently means to do tasks assigned to you at the
expected level of quality while also using the least amount of time
and resources.
8
9. Part of time management is making sure you
prioritize your schedule to arrive on time.
Completing work as quickly as possible is important, but there is
also a need to do high quality work without making mistakes.
Taking shortcuts, missing steps, or racing to finish a task tends to
hurt what you produce. Mistakes that are caused by hurrying can be
as much of a problem as when it takes too long to complete tasks.
If you turn it in on-time but it’s wrong, its still wrong.
Everyone needs to learn to manage time well to be successful.
9
10. What is it?
One resource designed to help you think
about time management and priorities
was developed by Stephen Covey.
Covey developed a time management
grid that will help you understand and
organize your priorities.
The grid has four quadrants organized by
urgency and importance.
1
11. Priority management
11
Quadrant I
tasks that are both urgent and
important.
Quadrant II
long-term strategizing and
development on tasks that
are important, but just are not very
urgent.
Quadrant III
time sensitive tasks that are not
important, but need immediate
attention so they are urgent.
Quadrant IV
activities that are not urgent
and not important.
Think “rainy day” tasks that can be
done any time.
At first, taking time to think deeply about how you use your time will seem
counterproductive. The benefit to thinking about priority management is
that it will become much more natural for you to do. As you develop your
thinking skills about time management, you will make better decisions, save
huge amounts of time, and increase productivity.
12. Priority Management
⊹ Look at the article I’ve given you over
Covey’s Grid.
⊹ Spend a few minutes filling in your own
grid with to-dos off the top of your head.
(the first use talked about in the article.)
12
13. Why is it important?
With most classes, policies about
attendance, tardiness and the
consequences for not showing up are
usually found in the syllabus. They are
also listed in your student catalog.
The best strategy for you to know an
instructor’s policies around time due
dates, late submissions, and missing
class is to look at their syllabus.
1
14. Why is it important?
Your syllabus should list:
• Due dates,
• Books and materials that are required and
suggested
• Instructor Expectations
• Participation & Attendance Policies
• Work Submissions Policies
• If they have it marked as “important”
or bolded, Don’t ignore it.

15. Syllabus
⊹ Check out the sample syllabus I’ve shared.
⊹ If you have access to your blackboard
classes, you should have a copy of your
syllabus on there.
⊹ Go ahead and look it over.
15
19. Wake Up!
Waking up early enough to
prepare and be at
work/school/appointments is an
important time management skill.
2
20. Wake Up! (doctor’s orders)
According Johns Hopkins, adults
18-64 need 7 to 9 hours of sleep
per night.
So, how do we find the balance
between too much and not
enough?
2
21. “
⊹ It’s all about balance.
⊹ Quality sleep is better than a
larger quantity of sleep.
⊹ Let’s check out some easy tips for
better sleep.
21
22. Better VS More
• Create a calm atmosphere in the home at
bedtime.
• A bath, reading a book, good smells, etc
• Avoid activities that will excite your senses late
in the evening.
• Find another time for video games, action movies,
intense reading or heavy studying.
• Keep the lights dim in the evening. Open the
curtains or blinds to let in bright light in the
morning. This helps keep your body clock set at
the right time.
2
23. Better VS More
Choosing only one or two of the
previously listed tips would make a
positive impact on your ability to be ready
for work or class each day and arrive on
time.
Taking care of your need for rest and sleep
can help improve your ability to function
on the job and manage your time wisely.
2
24. Life Skills
Effective time management skills span everything from
getting a good night's sleep, setting an alarm and
setting out clothes the night before to accurately
estimating the time it will take to complete an
important project at work.
As you will learn from the employers in this video, the
heart of effective time management is being
prepared and knowing your priorities.

26. S.M.A.R.T. Goals
⊹ How do you make sure you’re
prepared?
⊹ S.M.A.R.T. Goals!
⊹ What’s a S.M.A.R.T. goal?
3
27. “
⊹ S- Specific: Well defined and clear goal
⊹ M- Measurable: With specific criteria that
measure your progress toward the goal
⊹ A- Achievable: Attainable and possible to do
⊹ R-Realistic: Within reach, realistic, and relevant to
your life
⊹ T-Timely: With a clearly defined timeline,
including a start date and a hard end date. The
purpose is to create urgency. 27
28. S.M.A.R.T. Goals
⊹ Let’s look at your S.M.A.R.T. Goals
worksheet to see if we can work up
a simple goal.
