The Facts….
 Nearly 7 million Americans use prescription drugs like
pain relievers, tranquilizers, and stimulants non-
medically,
 More than 50% of prescription drug abusers got them
from family and friends.
 Middle aged adults have the highest prescription
opiate overdose rates
 People in rural counties are twice as likely to overdose
than people in the cities.

Depressants
 CNS depressants all share an ability to reduce
activity in the central nervous system and lower
levels of awareness in the brain, there are
important differences among substances within
this drug class. Some are safer than others,
while others have more potential for use for
medicinal purposes.
Depressants
 Ethyl Alcohol
 Barbiturates
 Symptoms include Insomnia, Seizures,
Insomnia, etc.
Opiates
 Opiate- a drug (as morphine or codeine)
containing or derived from opium and
tending to induce sleep and alleviate
pain.
Hallucinogens
 Hallucinogen: A drug that causes hallucinations
(profound distortions in a person's perceptions of
reality). Under the influence of hallucinogens, people
see images, hear sounds, and feel sensations that
seem real but do not exist. Some hallucinogens also
produce rapid, intense emotional swings.
Hallucinogens cause their effects by disrupting the
interaction of nerve cells and the neurotransmitter
serotonin.

Drug effects on the mind
 Psychosis-Psychosis is a serious mental
health condition in which a person loses touch
with reality. The extent to which the person is
affected by psychosis varies greatly, with some
people appearing to be quite normal, but
experiencing some difficulties with their
inward thoughts or perceptions, through to
people barely being aware of their
surroundings.
Drug effects on the body
The following are physical and mental effects of drug
abuse:
-Hair Loss
-Tissue damage
-Paranoia
-Insomnia
-Paralysis
-Suicidal Thoughts
-Hallucinations

-dis-colored urine
Before and After
Recovery
 Rehab centers- Centers where drug addicts
can get the help that they need.
 Hospital- Provide medical treatment to drug
addictions. This usually comes before
rehabilitation.
