means that he lives in Australia all the time. It is a
permanent state.
What’s the difference?
I am studying for my final exams.

means that the action is taking place only for a
short period of time.
How do we form PRESENT
SIMPLE?

The verb BE
Remember the Present Simple tense of the verb BE
I AM
HE,SHE, IT IS
WE, YOU, THEY ARE
I am a teacher
you are my students.
Negative form of the verb to BE
only we add the word NOT after the verb
I am happy.  I am not happy.
He is poor.  He is not poor.
We are at school .  We are not at school.
Negative forms with verbs
different to the verb To Be
For all verbs use:
don’t

doesn’t
I work at home.  I don’t work at home.

She plays basketball.  She doesn’t play basketball.

Questions and answers
We make questions using the auxiliary verb y do or
does or any form of the verb BE before the subject:
Does you live in Australia?
Yes, I do. No, I don’t.
Does she play basketball?
Yes, she does. No, she doesn’t.
Are they my friends?
Yes, they are. No they aren’t.
We use PRESENT SIMPLE…
1. For facts or things that are generally true.
The fish swim.
It rains a lot in the Amazon Region.
The blood is red.

2. For permanent situations
I live in Guayaquil.
Joe cooks in a restaurant.
Sam practices soccer everyday.
We use PRESENT SIMPLE…
3. For things we do regularly: hobbies, habits
and routines.
I take a shower at 7:30.
I have breakfast at 8:00 o`clock.
Then I take the bus to work.
Every Monday I play baseball.
We use PRESENT SIMPLE…
4. For actions that are scheduled.
The bus leaves at 9 p.m.
The test starts at 7:30 o’clock in the morning.
Adverbs of frequency and time phrases
Always Once a week
Often Twice a month
Usually Every day
Sometimes Four times a year
Rarely Every Tuesday
Never
I always go to the cinema on Sunday.
My sister sees her doctor every month.
What is the PRESENT CONTINUOUS form ?
Subject + Verb To Be + Verb + ing

Negative forms and questions

1. For actions happening now, at the moment of speaking.
It is raining outside.
He is cooking right now.
We use PRESENT CONTINUOUS…
2. For temporary actions
They are looking for a new car at the moment.
We are fixing radio.
We use PRESENT CONTINUOUS…
3. For fixed arrangements (plans) in the near future.
I am going out with my friends tonight.
We are traveling to Miami tomorrow morning.
We use PRESENT CONTINUOUS…
4. For currently changing and developing situations.
The prices are increasing again and again.
Time expressions we use with
PRESENT CONTINUOUS
now, right now, at the moment, at present,
these days, nowadays, today, tonight
My father is writing at the moment.
I am going singing tonight.

PRESENT SIMPLE VS PRESENT CONTINUOUS

  • 4. Let’s continue with some more examples..... I live in Australia. I am studying for my final exams.
  • 5. What’s the difference? I live in Australia. means that he lives in Australia all the time. It is a permanent state.
  • 6. What’s the difference? I am studying for my final exams. . means that the action is taking place only for a short period of time.
  • 7. How do we form PRESENT SIMPLE? I YOU HE WE play SHE plays THEY IT I play baseball. She plays basketball.
  • 8. The verb BE Remember the Present Simple tense of the verb BE I AM HE,SHE, IT IS WE, YOU, THEY ARE I am a teacher you are my students.
  • 9. Negative form of the verb to BE only we add the word NOT after the verb I am happy.  I am not happy. He is poor.  He is not poor. We are at school .  We are not at school.
  • 10. Negative forms with verbs different to the verb To Be For all verbs use: don’t + verb doesn’t I work at home.  I don’t work at home. (do not) She plays basketball.  She doesn’t play basketball. (does not)

  • 14. We use PRESENT SIMPLE… 3. For things we do regularly: hobbies, habits and routines. I take a shower at 7:30. I have breakfast at 8:00 o`clock. Then I take the bus to work. Every Monday I play baseball.
  • 15. We use PRESENT SIMPLE… 4. For actions that are scheduled. The bus leaves at 9 p.m. The test starts at 7:30 o’clock in the morning.
