What is advertising?
 Advertising is a marketing communication
that employs an openly sponsored, non-
personal message to promote or sell a
product, service or idea.
Types of advertising
 Advertising is communicated through
various social media
 Newspapers
 Magazines
 television
 radio,
 outdoor advertising or direct mail;
 new media such as search results,
Blogs
History of advertising
 The Egyptians used papyrus to
advertise goods and services.
 In ancient Rome and other parts of the
ancient world mosaics, pictures on
signs or walls were used by businesses
to advertise their wares.
 The Athenians, however, took
advertising to a whole new level by
using town criers to stroll the streets
advertising products and services (very
similar to our television and radio
commercials) and can probably be
credited with being the inventors of
advertising as we know it today.
 The earliest surviving printed ad in English was
published in 1477 by William Caxton, English
merchant, diplomat, writer and printer. This ad
announces Caxton's edition of the "Sarum Ordinal"
or "Pye", a list of rules for clergy at Salisbury on
how to deal with the changing date of Easter.

started promoting advertising
in the 1920s. In 1925 the
Secretary of Commerce,
Herbert Hoover, addressed
the Associated Advertising
Clubs of the World with a
speech called “Advertising is
a vital force in our National
Life”.

television in the 50s allowed for even
more creativity

South America, and in
exactly the ways the
company wants.

marketed as almost
aggressively non-
nationally-affiliated. The
wide variety of different
colors arranged in such a
way as to not resemble the
mblem of any country, as
well as the inclusive lines,

where a feeling of global
unity is attractive to
consumers.
