1. Tips on Exploring Lisbon during Your Vacation
The bustling city of Lisbon is charming and a
perfect blend of old and new. Its unpretentious
charm, cobblestone streets, trams, Gothic
churches, old-style bars and cafés and modern
buildings situated in medieval districts are the
reasons why Lisbon tourism has not suffered
even during the recent economic downturn.
When you visit the city, you will find it very helpful if you know which are the
neighborhoods that you should spend time exploring. So without much ado, here
are some neighborhoods that you should make sure you visit to take in the culture
and history of this magnificent city.
Belem
This district is renowned for its majestic monuments, fascinating architecture and
lush gardens. It is a western suburb that used to be the anchoring point for ships
that went to explore the New World and make discoveries. The Gothic and
Renaissance architecture in the district can leave you spellbound. Be sure to visit
the Jeronimos Monastery and take in its massive size and architecture. This
monastery was constructed in 1460 as a place where sailors could come and
discover their spiritual selves. Its stonework is the perfect combination of Gothic
and Renaissance architecture. Another monument that you should check out in this
district is the Monument of Discoveries. Although it was constructed in 1960, it is an
ode to Portuguese sea explorations that took place in the 15th and 16th centuries.
And, the belle of the district and city is undoubtedly the Belem Tower, which is a 4-
story structure composed of towers, battlements and turrets. It was constructed in
the 16th century and you can climb to the top of the tower using the steep and
narrow steps and get a great view of the city.
Baixa
This is the commercial district of Lisbon. It was rebuilt after the massive
earthquake that wreaked havoc in the city in 1755. Today, Baixa District is a
2. network of organized streets that you can reach using the subway. It has old-style
boutiques and international chains lining the streets, which are dotted with
restaurants and cafés. You can take a leisurely walk along the streets and when you
get tired, you can stop at any of the pavement cafés and enjoy some great coffee
with traditional Portuguese pastries. If you want to buy souvenirs and gifts to take
back home, visit the Rua Augusta that joins Rossio Square and Praca do Comercio.
This pedestrian-only street is a treasure trove of stores and shops that you will love
browsing through.
Bairro Alto
This neighborhood is located on top of a hill and can be accessed by trams, which
you can catch from Baixa District. The district is a network of narrow cobblestone
streets and has a medieval air to it. But do not let that fool you, as it is a vibrant
neighborhood. The view of the city from here is mesmerizing. Be sure to visit the
Church of Sao Roque, which was built in the 16th century. Do not let the simple
exteriors fool you and once you step indoors, you will be struck by the opulence.
The interior is decorated in gilt, gold, mosaic and marble.
The popularity of Lisbon tourism among European travelers is a testimony of the
city. Right from history to its beautiful monuments and vibrant ambience, the city
has something for everyone. Regardless of your budget, you will be able to enjoy
