2. WHAT IS INTERNET ?
 Internet is an interconnected network of thousands
of networks and millions of computers
Linking business,educational institutions,govertnment
agencies and individuals
OR
Internet is a group of two or more networks that are :
 Interconnected physically
 Capable of communicating and sharing data with
each other
 Able to act together as a single network.

3. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET
o 1957 – USSR launched the first artificial satellite,
SPUTNIK
o 1958 – USA dept of defence formed the Advanced
Research Projects Agency (ARPA) .
o 1967 – National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in
england developed the NPL network – an
experiment in packet switching .
o 1970 – First cross country link installed between
computers in USA.

4.  1971 - Ray Tomlinson invented email programme to
send messages across a distributed network project i.e
email.
 1972 – improvements made to email-@ sign introduced.
 1973 – first international connections to ARPANET from
london via norway.
 (FTP) introduced –method of transferring files between
internet sites.
 1974- telnet was introduced.
 1975 – satellite links established across two oceans (to
hawaii and UK)

5.  1981 – BITNET network between USA universities
established.
 1983 –European Academic and Research Network
(EARN) established.
 1984 – Domain name system introduced.
 1991 – world wide web released – the protocol
developed by Tim Berners Lee and others in europe was
based on hypertext.
 1994 – the first banner ads appeared.

6.  1995 – real video, and audio streaming technology ,
yahoo released as a hierarchical search engine.
 2003 the first official swiss online election took place in
anieses.
 2004 First version of Mozilla firefox released.
 2006 twitter created.

8. ADVANTAGES OF INTERNET
 information on almost every subject is available.
 Ability to do research from your home
 Message boards where people can discuss ideas
on any topic. Ability to get wide range of opinions .
Peoples can find others that have a similar interest
in what ever they are interested in.

9.  The internet provides the ability of emails.
 Video conference.
 Friendship connections are also been made over the
internet.
 News of all kinds is available almost instantaneously.

10. DISADVANTAGES OF INTERNET
 There is a lot of wrong information on the internet.
 There are a lot of unsrupulous business that have
sprung up on the internet to take advantage of
people.
 Easy to waste a lot of time on the internet.
 Network architecture limitations.
 Wired internet.
