Co - curricular activities in
Environmental Education
Dr. (Mrs.) B. Tron
INTRODUCTION
• Co-curricular activities (CCA’s) were earlier known as
extra curricular activities(ECA).
• Co-curricular development can facilitate in the
development of various domains (cognitive, affective
and psychomotor) of mind.
• They also facilitate the different personality aspects
such as social, moral, aesthetic development.
• Creativity, enthusiasm, and positive thinking are some
of the facets of personality development , these can be
supplemented by CCA s.
MEANING
• Co-curricular activities generally mean that ,
there are some activities taken up during
academic period but are not academic works,
at the same time they can facilitate the
development of the child.
• Co- curricular activities, therefore are
activities that have to be done or performed
along with the curricular activities.
Definitions
• Oxford Dictionary - Co-curricular activities
are defined as the activities that enables to
supplement and complement the curricular or
main syllabi activities.
• Co-curricular refers to activities, programs,
and learning experiences that complement, in
some way, what students are learning in
school—i.e., experiences that are connected to
or mirror the academic curriculum.
CCA in EE
• In the context of Environmental education CCA’s
can nurture the scientific knowledge among
students.
• Environmental education lays more emphasis on
development of attitudes; skills, and values hence
co-curricular activities are an effective means of
achieving the objectives of the affective domain.
• Field trip, collection, exhibition, film shows, video
shows, eco club activities are some of the examples.
• CCA’s are useful in developing the students’ interest
towards Environmental science and education.
Fieldtrip
• A field trip is an outdoor lesson in action.
• A field trip is a planned visit to a point outside
the classroom setting for proper understanding
about basic environmental concepts along with
development of attitudes and skills necessary
for environmental protection.
BENEFITS OF FIELD TRIP
• Many of the scientific concepts require first hand
experience outside the classroom setting for
proper understanding
• It gives opportunities to collect samples, verify
hypotheses and interpret experience
• It bridges gap between theoretical concepts and
reality
• It can stimulate sensory organs(smell, touch, see,
hear)
• It bring joyful experience in learning environment
• It reduces the monotony of regular classroom
teaching.
COLLECTION
• According to the Oxford dictionary -
‘Collection is the process of collecting
something, it may or may not related to course
work”.
• It is a very important step in environmental
studies. Activities like field trip helps students
to collect samples.
BENEFITS OF COLLECTION
Collection work helps to gather information.
It develops keen observation skill.
It helps students to verify hypotheses by
verifying collected materials.
EXHIBITION
• An Exhibition is an organized presentation and display of
selected items.
• Exhibition is generally classified into two, Art Exhibition
and Science Exhibition.
• Students made items like painting, drawings, crafts,
SUPW items are the main exhibition materials in art
exhibition.
• Science exhibition is also known as science fair. Here
students exhibit science projects, reports, display board,
science related charts, still and working models
BENEFITS OF EXHIBITION
• Exhibition enables the students to express
themselves or their ideas through the different
creations and exhibits.
• Through organization of exhibition and
presentation students develop leadership qualities.
• Develop the skill of co-ordination and co-
operation in different situations
• Environmental projects, reports and presentation
helps students gain in-depth knowledge about
environmental issues.
FILM SHOWS & VIDEOS
• In the context of Environmental education , It
is the process of showing films related to
environmental issues.
• The Cove, Butterfly, Blue vinyl, Clouds of
smoke … etc. are the famous environmental
films that are shown in schools.
BENEFITS OF FILM SHOWS
• Films which have the theme of importance of
nature, can develop interest in environmental
studies.
• Environmental issues related films helps to
convey the messages of the need of environmental
protection.
• It provide a joyful experience in learning and to
gain awareness about Nature and Environment
• It helps in making abstract concepts clear, as
everything can be visualized and explained in
detail.
ECO CLUBS
• Eco club or green club is a voluntary group which promotes
the participation of students in learning about, and
improving their environment. A green club is a means by
which students and youth can organize themselves to learn
more on this issue, and also take action to improve their
immediate environment.
• Eco clubs play an important role in creating environmental
awareness among public and students in particular.
• It is the platform of knowledge about environment .
• Road cleaning , putting up campaign boards , planting
flowering trees and shadow trees in road sides
• Organize seminar, debates, lectures and popular talk and
environmental issues in schools Organize rallies, marches,
human chains, and street theatre in public places, taking
short films are the common activities of eco club
BENEFITS OF ECO CLUBS
• Eco club activities help to educate the students about their
environment.
• They can be beneficial in developing a clean and green
consciousness among students through various innovative
methods.
• It helps to mobilize students towards scientific enquiry
into environmental problems
• It motivates students to put in effort to preserve
environment.
• It also motivates students how to imbibe habits and life
style for minimum waste management.
Environmental Games
• Games and play help in keeping good health, mental
balance, emotional control, social qualities
development.
• Centre of Environmental Education, Ahmadabad has
initiated the use of games in the field of environment.
• Games like ‘Web of Life’ help in inter-relating various
aspects of nature and visually communicate the
concept of ‘Web Of Life’.
• In this activity, children will learn about food webs,
discovering the many ways that plants and animals of
a forest ecosystem are connected.
• E.g.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OM9GdUb6zE
Environmental Songs
• Songs and poems about Nature, Environment, Living
Beings, and Beauty of Universe have always been a
source of inspiration and knowledge. E.g. Mother Earth
Song
• Songs about nature and the environment can inspire
individuals to admire nature and in turn contribute
towards its preservation. Environmental songs like any
other category of songs (victory songs, spiritual songs
etc. ) reflects and affects faith and values.
• Thus, environmental education can be imparted
effectively and interestingly to the students with the
help of songs.
Nature Conservation Work
massive plantation
cleaning of water bodies
preservation of forest
Conservation of natural resources
These activities can help in developing spirit of environmental
awareness. These activities can be conducted by educational
institutions, scouts and guides, eco clubs and other school’s
environmental associations, etc.
Different Environmental Competitions
Competitions help in realizing the desired objectives of environmental
education.
 Drawing and Painting
Competitions,
 Essay Writing Competitions,
 General Knowledge
Competitions,
 Quiz Competitions,
 Debates,
 Inter-School Beautification
Competitions,
 Paper Reading Competitions,
 Photography Competitions,
 Philately Competitions,
 Plays,
 Poster Competitions,
 Slogan Writing Competitions,
 Environmental Message
Competition,
 Song and Poem Competitions
CONCLUSION
• Co-curricular activities are the true practical
experience received to students . The
theoretical knowledge gets strengthened when
a relevant Co-curricular activity is organized .
In the context of Environmental education Co-
curricular activities have an important role .
Through the practical experience students
acquire knowledge, and they use the
knowledge in their life also.
