Mobility as a Service (MaaS)
Trial in Sydney – An Overview
A partnership through the iMove CRC of ITLS at
the University of Sydney, IAG and Skedgo
Version: 11 June 2019
The University of Sydney Page 2
Mult-Modal Options and How the Market is Changing
The University of Sydney Page 3
mobility as a service ≠ mobility service
It is also NOT Mobility on Demand(MOD)
MOD – trip planning and booking, real time info, fare payment in a single user interface
In general MaaS primarily focusses on passenger mobility aggregation and subscription services
mobility as a service ≠ mobility technology
OPPORTUNITIES+REALITIES
The University of Sydney Page 4
Thus, what is MaaS?
The University of Sydney Page 5
WHAT IS MaaS? Mobility as a Service is a combination of
public and private transport services within a given regional
environment that provides holistic, optimal and people centred travel
options, to enable end-to- end journeys paid for by the user as a
single charge, and which aims to achieve key public equity
objectives. (Cubic definition)
The University of Sydney Page 6
The Sydney MaaS Trial Approach
The University of Sydney Page 7
Three reasons for why the trial is being undertaken
– Digital devices and connectivity open new possibilities to improve
transport
– MaaS might hold potential to improve and/or complement
traditional public transport
– The knowledge of appropriate mode mixes and subscription plans
is limited
The University of Sydney Page 8
Project objectives
– To explore appropriate transport service mixes and subscription plans for
early adopters of MaaS
– To generate first-hand knowledge of actual MaaS experiences
– To assess the readiness of the current public and private transport mix in
Sydney to support MaaS
– To advance the understanding of user uptake and willingness-to-pay for
MaaS
– To test the ability to influence travel behaviour through introducing MaaS
subscriptions
– To document the experience in designing, planning and undertaking a MaaS
trial

Getting Started
The University of Sydney Page 16
Getting Started in-depth interviews
– Deep dive discussions suggested that a two-stage approach may
improve both the engagement and retention of participants.
– The format will allow the first month of the trial (mid Sept 2019)
to engage participant through a PAYG model, to reduce hesitation
to MaaS while providing accurate data for bundle design.
– This reduces the set-up effort for the participant through a
familiar payment model, while ensuring a low ongoing
maintenance effort resulting for an optimised bundle offering.
The University of Sydney Page 17
Getting Started
– From the second month onwards (October 2019), bundle options
will be provided to participants, based on the collected data from
the pre-trial survey and month 1 PAYG experience.
– Participants are able to voluntarily opt into these options,
providing further evidence surrounding willingness to pay and
viability of payment models.
– Surveys are split into two phases:
– Phase 1: Initial screening survey (pre-trial) to gather recent travel
and demographic data and provides a high-level overview of
MaaS.
– Phase 2 (within trial): Survey aimed at creating the ideal bundle for
MaaS participants, including the SP design. To be distributed
amongst trial participants during the first month of the trial.
