Center for Sustainable Urban Development
DIRECTOR: Jonathan Barton
SUB-DIRECTOR: Juan Carlos Muñoz A.
PRINCIPAL RESEARCHERS: Juan Antonio Carrasco M.
Fernando Pérez O.
Pablo Pastén G.
SPONSORING INSTITUTION: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
2. CEDEUS OBJECTIVES
A national space for knowledge An interdisciplinary platform to link research,
generation and exchange, to knowledge and expertise of national and
support the urban ? development international researchers
process and enhance quality of life
for current and future urban
residents…
Training of researchers (postdoctoral,
…recognizing the biophysical and doctoral, masters and undergraduates)
socio-economic opportunities and through thesis work within research clusters
constraints that shape urban
processes
Knowledge transfer and interactions
between researchers and practitioners
MISSION OBJECTIVES
3. SCIENTIFIC PROBLEM
Evident challenges in the quality and distribution of the provision of housing, infrastructure and services
Weaknesses in public planning and participation in the pursuit of improved urban quality of life.
-more and better research,
-more qualified researchers
-more and better engagement across the science-practice interface.
By engaging with interconnected issues in specific contexts (6 city applications)…
- Analysis investments relating to urban and regional issues
- Problem-oriented research agenda, including inter or trans-disciplinary approaches
- To improve the quality of knowledge oriented towards urban problems
- Create interdisciplinary knowledge, exchange and debate between researchers and practitioners
The aims are to generate:
– New knowledge about historical and current Chilean urban experiences, e.g. in planning, transport, housing,
public space provision, urban heritage, and resource use.
– Assessment and innovation in urban planning and management tools and instruments
– Generation and evaluation of models, strategies and prototypes for modifications of public policies and
practices

Arturo Orellana, Sonia Reyes, Francisco Sabatini, Gonzalo
Caceres, Federico Arenas, Alejandro Salazar, Cristian
Henriquez, Johannes Rehner, Alejandra Vives, Guillermo
Wormald, Juan Luis Celis, Olga Barbosa, Carlos de Mattos
To undertake research that leads to
improvements in spatial planning processes
and outcomes, also to a better understanding
of the synergies of urbano socio-ecological
and socio-economic systems
6. LINES OF RESEARCH Access and Mobility
Principal reseacher:
Juan Carlos Muñoz
Associate researchers:
Juan de Dios Ortuzar, Ricardo Giesen, Luis I. Rizzi,
Louis de Grange.
The continued expansion of urban centers, with
associated changes in land use, seriously affect the
environmental conditions, and the mobility and
quality of life of its citizens. The complex interaction
at different scales of the various problems associated
with passenger and freight movements requires the
development of specific scientific knowledge and
new technologies to reduce the negative impacts of
transport operations
7. LINES OF RESEARCH Critical Resources
Principal reseacher:
Pablo Pastén
Associate researchers:
Gonzalo Pizarro, Ignacio Vargas, Carlos Bonilla,
Jorge Gironas, Sergio Vera, Hector Jorquera
This cluster will advance scientific knowledge and
technology in order to develop integrative solutions
for the sustainable use of water, soil and energy,
and to enforce environmental health controls in
urban development. Cities are facing new
challenges regarding the fulfillment of basic
requirements for a growing population, in addition
to global challenges such as depletion of natural
resources and coping with the effects of climate
change
8. LINES OF RESEARCH Built Environment
Principal reseacher:
Fernando Pérez
Associate researchers:
Rosanna Forray, Waldo Bustamante, Margarita
Greene, Eugenio Garces, Manuel Tironi, Rodrigo
Hidalgo, José Manuel Allard
Research into material conditions and quality of life
in the built environment, focusing on housing,
public space and lanscape, urban heritage, and
energy efficiency.
9. ADVANCED HUMAN CAPITAL TRAINING
Operating with 22 or 44 hours dedication to the Center.
Focus on Postdoctoral
They will also engage in research visits to the international
fellows collaborating organizations.
Encouraging funded students to work with members of the Center
Support for Doctoral and to link their research to the specific Research Areas and their
interconnections.
students
The Center will support their work with funding to attend
conferences and for complementing fieldwork.
Support for Masters and Linking their research to the specific Research Areas and their
interconnections.
undergraduate thesis The Center will support their work with funding to attend
students conferences and for complementing fieldwork.
Research training Bringing together thesis students, postdoctorate fellows and all other
researchers to share experiences and to confront specific challenges
through conceptual and
faced in urban research.
methodological It is expected that visiting scholars will be an important part of this
workshops training and knowledge-sharing process.
