BPI group’s Executive Employment Trends Report offers visibility into the
current executive job market. We are committed to quality and results in
our career transition programs, and believe that keeping a careful eye on
trends in the market is an important way to ensure that we meet the
needs of our career transition clients. The findings of this report are
based on landing data collected on our Executive Advisory Services (EAS)
clients who completed their job search between Q3 2017 and Q3 2018.
The Executive Employment Trends Report includes analysis of the
following executive employment trends:
– Average length of the executive job search
– How the length of the job search is impacted by various factors,
including:
• Base Salary Level
• Education Level
• Age

Key Takeaways
The strong nationwide
economy and lowest
unemployment rate in
50 years are reflected
in BPI group’s landing
statistics, with EAS
clients landing in an
average of 4.9 months.
This is among the
lowest times in
transition since we
began reporting these
statistics.
More highly paid,
educated,
experienced, and
older executives
continue to take
longer to transition;
however, the
range in time is
significantly lower
than 5 years ago.
Networking and one-
to-one touchpoints
account for the
majority of new
opportunities and
landings, consistently
65% over the past five
years, and rising to
about 70% most
recently.
The majority of
executives in
transition are pursuing
and landing in similar
or better re-
employment, rather
than entrepreneurial
pursuits or leisure-
based “real”
retirement. This is
another reflection of
the strong transition
market and the unique
employment landscape
over the past five
decades.

This report is based on survey
responses from a sample of BPI
group’s Executive Advisory Services
clients, representing 64% men and
36% women.
All executives surveyed completed
their transition with BPI group
between Q3 2017 and Q3 2018.

Length of Job Search
Executives spent an average of 4.9 months in the job search. This was significantly less time than
the national average of 6.9 months for those in executive roles, and 5.5 months for the general
U.S. workforce, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in September.
Salary at the new job:
• 60% rated the compensation at their new job
as better than that of their previous job
• 13% rated the compensation at their new job
as the same as that of their previous job
• 27% rated the compensation at their new job
as less than that of their previous job

  • 3. Key Takeaways The strong nationwide economy and lowest unemployment rate in 50 years are reflected in BPI group’s landing statistics, with EAS clients landing in an average of 4.9 months. This is among the lowest times in transition since we began reporting these statistics. More highly paid, educated, experienced, and older executives continue to take longer to transition; however, the range in time is significantly lower than 5 years ago. Networking and one- to-one touchpoints account for the majority of new opportunities and landings, consistently 65% over the past five years, and rising to about 70% most recently. The majority of executives in transition are pursuing and landing in similar or better re- employment, rather than entrepreneurial pursuits or leisure- based “real” retirement. This was significantly less time than the national average of 6.9 months for those in executive roles, and 5.5 months for the general U.S. workforce, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in September.
