All About Electricity Unit Plan
MONDAY
Analyze the Learner
My class is a fourth grade class of 24 students-- 13 boys and 11 girls.
• 14 of my students are white, 7 are African American, and 3 are
Asian.
• One student has Asperger’s, four have ADHD, and one has
dyslexia.
• Two students are gifted learners.
State the Objectives
Today, at the end of this lesson, my students will identify what static -electricity is
and verify the behavior of positive and negative electrical charges by using
balloons, with 75% of the learners finishing the lesson proficient on the topic.
Select the Methods, Media, and Materials
We will need the School House Rock, “Electricity, Electricity” video and the video
of my demonstration of static electricity; both of these can be found on YouTube.
We will also need supplies to create our own demonstration (balloons, tissue
paper, blanket or towel) that I will provide. I will post video materials for the week
Utilize Media and Materials
I plan to use the “Electricity, Electricity” through out the week to help students
learn key facts about electricity. Students will watch the video of the
demonstration during one of their centers. Then, we have our own
demonstration in class using our knowledge from the video to lead our
discussion.
Require Learner Participation
In the morning, one of my students’ learning centers will be to watch the
demonstration of how charges work. We will begin our science lesson that
afternoon by listening to “Electricity, Electricity” to get in the mood for our new
electricity unit. Then, we will begin our discussion on what is static electricity. I
will ask students what they learned about charges, how charges behave, and ask
them to show me using their balloons. I will use this discussion to help them
understand what static electricity is.
Evaluate and Revise
I will examine student participation in our discussion and demonstration to
analyze how well they understood the video. I will be able to answer questions
and help them fill in the information gaps about static electricity and charges
during our discussion.
