Big Data PPP Industrial Data Platforms - Towards cross-sectorial optimization and traceability
To start identifying synergies and to learn how different projects will address key data collection, sharing, integration, and exploitation challenges, a series of webinars have been organized under the umbrella of this Big Data Value PPP. These webinars are also organized by BDVA, BDVe project, and other projects which are part of this PPP.

Personal Data
2
§ Tons of data generated today
§ Some of it remains offline, while
some of it is online
§ Only 15% of people feel they have
control of their data
§ GDPR is here to protect it, but is
quite new
§ People share their value without
getting a fair amount of it back

Motivation &
Challenges
3
§ With an estimated 3.5 billion active
users, the total value of the market of
personal data is approximately $210
billion, as advertising targeted using
the personal data of an average user
generates roughly $60.00
§ A general willingness of more than
70% of millennials (aged between 16-
34) to share their data for actual
benefits, non-necessarily financial

Addressing the Challenges
5
let the data owners (the individuals)
decide what, how much and in which
manner they would like to share it
guarantee the privacy and security of
their data
retrieve a fair share of the value their
data generates

Vision
§ FOR WHOM? DataVaults will enable a new mode of collaboration/business relationship between individuals and
organizations that would like to manage/process the personal data of individuals
§ WHY? Turn the personal data value chain into a multi-sided and multi-tier ecosystem governed by smart
contracts to safeguard data ownership, privacy and usage and attribute value to all entities that generate value
within this chain and especially data owners.
DataVaults aims to deliver a framework and a platform that has personal data,
coming from diverse sources in its centre and that defines secure, trusted and
privacy preserving mechanisms allowing individuals to take ownership and control
of their data and share them at will, through flexible data sharing and fair
compensation schemes with other entities
Target Users: Individuals – Data Providers – Data Seekers & Data Analysts 6

Who are the Actors?
7
Data Providers
• Individuals who extract, collect
in one place and securely store
their personal data, share them
and take control of their usage.
Data Requestors
• Economic Operators and Public
Administrations who explore
extracts or metadata, request
access and perform analyses

European Union (H2020-ICT-2019-2) under Grant Agreement No. 871755
and is contributing to the BDV-PPP of the European Commission.
Key Technical Challenges within and beyond
§ How to ensure that data owners remain always in control
of their data?
§ How to handle and enforce “data” sharing contracts
instead of traditional bilateral agreements?
§ How to guarantee privacy of individuals?
§ How to valuate data and derivatives?
§ How to convince individuals to use DataVaults? What will
be the eventual role of the “demonstrators” (data
sources/platform satellites/API consumers??

What can be Shared?
§ Data, which do offer to economic operators accurate results but are resource
greedy and in many cases include a higher degree of privacy risks
§ Data Analytics, which can be performed either on the edge or on the cloud-
based DataVaults platform, which may provide the same accuracy as sharing
plain data, but improve the privacy level of individuals
§ Complex Insights, which are combination of analytics, that further improve
privacy but provide valuable information to interested stakeholders.
