Areas of Automation in Libraries
Library services are users’ oriented,
library is set up to meet information needs
of its clientele in the most comfortable
means. Today’s library users have soft
touch for electronic technology devices
and information on that format, thus,
librarians imbibed use of modern
technology in processing the information
and making it accessible and available.

 This section is saddled with the
responsibilities of adding new
collections to library holdings through
all methods of acquisition: purchases,
gifts, donations, exchange, bequeath
and legal deposits.

 This section is vested with the
responsibilities of organizing library
collections. It ascribes class mark,
access points and call number base
on content/subject orientation of the
collections. Academic libraries adopt
Library of Congress Classification
Scheme (LCCS) while school libraries
use Dewey Decimal Classification
(DDC).

 This is a unique section of a library; it is a
library within a library because all activities
in other sections (acquisition, cataloguing,
preservation, circulation, reference etc) of
a library are being carried out in this
section too. Serial section a a library deals
with management of serial collections
such as journals, periodicals, ephemerals
(magazines, newspapers, institutions
publications, order of programmes,
inaugural lecture materials etc).

unit achieves this through
mechanical and chemical
methods.

  • 2. Areas of Automation in Libraries Library services are users’ oriented, library is set up to meet information needs of its clientele in the most comfortable means. Today’s library users have soft touch for electronic technology devices and information on that format, thus, librarians imbibed use of modern technology in processing the information and making it accessible and available.

  • 6. Acquisition Section  This section is saddled with the responsibilities of adding new collections to library holdings through all methods of acquisition: purchases, gifts, donations, exchange, bequeath and legal deposits.

Academic libraries adopt Library of Congress Classification Scheme (LCCS) while school libraries use Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC).

Serial Section  This is a unique section of a library; it is a library within a library because all activities in other sections (acquisition, cataloguing, preservation, circulation, reference etc) of a library are being carried out in this section too. Serial section a a library deals with management of serial collections such as journals, periodicals, ephemerals (magazines, newspapers, institutions publications, order of programmes, inaugural lecture materials etc).

Bindery/Preservation, Security and Digital preservation Unit  The activity of this unit involves preserving and conserving library collection, making sure the collections are close to their original nature and preventing stealing, mutilation and defacement of its collections. This unit achieves this through mechanical and chemical methods.
