2. What is the IGSN?

“M-1” is obviously not a unique name.
4. IGSN Overview
What IGSN does:
• Provide identifiers that are guaranteed to be unique via a
hierarchical governance system. (like assigning IP addresses)
• Facilitate internet-based discovery and access to physical samples
• Web application and programmatic access to sample metadata catalogues
• Network with sample repositories and data centres
• Ensure preservation and access of sample data
• Aid identification of samples in the literature

5. How to Resolve an IGSN
• IGSN are registered as Handles in
the Handle namespace 10273.
• Example: AU288
• http://hdl.handle.net/10273/AU288

6. Hierarchical Relationships in IGSN
Example: ICDP5054EEW1001
HTTP URI
• http://hdl.handle.net/10273/ICDP5054E
EW1001
• http://doi.org/10273/ICDP5054EEW1001
IGSN metadata can also record
parent-child relationships between
samples:
• drill hole (parent) and drill core
sections (children)
• subsamples (children) of a larger
sample (parent)

7. What IGSN can be used for
• Geological samples and other
materials (rocks, water,
biological materials, …)
• Collections (groupings of
samples)
• Sampling features (boreholes,
outcrops, …)
• Samples can be linked to each
other through the “related
identifier” metadata element.
IGSN Overview | Jens Klump7 |
8. Registration vs. Description Metadata
• The separation of
administrative and descriptive
metadata is a learning from
setting up DataCite.
• Metadata in a common service
can be:
• Least common denominator
• All-encompassing with lots of
optional elements
• Communities of practice
define their metadata as an
extension of a core set of
metadata.

9. IGSN Registration Metadata
• Sample Number
• IGSN
• Registrant
• Name and Identifier (e.g. VIAF)
• Related Identifier
• Related Object
• Relation Type
• Log
• Event
• Time Stamp
• Comment

10. IGSN Description Metadata
• Sample Identification
• IGSN, field name, type,
classification
• Sampling Activity
• Location, time, sampling feature,
collector
• Sample Curation
• Curator, repository
• Related Resources
• Related Object
• Relation Type

The schema gives a minimal set of
descriptive metadata for a global sample
catalogue.

11. IGSN in Australia
• IGSN currently has three members in
Australia:
• CSIRO
• Geoscience Australia
• Curtin University
• Joint governance of the use of IGSN in
Australia.
• Community building (e.g. workshops) to
introduce sample identifiers to other
institutions and other science disciplines.

12. Tracking the sample life cycle
IGSN is used in CSIRO for
tracking samples and to support
sample logistics.
• In the field: unambiguous
identification, metadata
capture with mobile app.
• In the lab: identification and
tying data to samples.
• Storage: identify collections
and samples in storage,
catalogue, manage sample
logistics.

14. How to Participate
• As an individual
• register your samples through an
Allocating Agent
• use the IGSN
– sample labels, data tables on
your computer and in
publications
• As an organisation
• become a member of the IGSN e.V.
– as a regular member at act as an
Allocating Agent
– as an affiliate member to
promote and support the IGSN
