Knowing what we each don’t know: bringing Library and Researcher/Developer communities together to bridge the technical divide
This presentation was part of the CAVAL/ANDS Workshop - Managing library teams for a research and data-intensive future
(Melbourne, 28 July 2017). Workshop program and presentations from other speakers: http://www.ands.org.au/news-and-events/presentations/2017

6. A software service providing researchers access to data,
analysis and collaboration tools.
Increasingly, research will be done in virtual labs.
VL services solve issues..
- Data being too big to download
- Data being too big to compute on your laptop
- Data being too big to collaborate over
- Analysis software too hard to use and install

10. This is where we *really* need librarians.

11. A joint ANDS, Nectar, RDS investment program for 2017-2018+.
Librarians need to influence virtual labs and their researchers by
- Helping develop data management, archival and publishing policy
- Helping researchers understand the long term implications of working
with data

12. Final Thoughts
Researchers know they need to code to solve immediate problems. They
don’t often know they need data management until it's too late.
In a world of virtual labs, what are their relation to data repositories? How do
research offices track outputs of virtual labs?
Tech doesn’t hold the answer.
