- 2. Definition of Wound
Break in the skin or internal body surfaces
An injury to living tissue caused by a cut, blow or other
impact, especially where skin is cut or broken

Contusion (bruise)
Laceration
Incised wound
Puncture wound
Stab wound
Graze (abrasion)
Gunshot wound

- 4. Contusion (Bruise)
This is a wound caused by blunt blow
A blunt blow can rupture capillaries beneath the skin,
causing blood to leak into the tissues
This process results in bruising; the skin may also split
Extensive contusion may indicate deeper damage, such
as a fracture or an internal injury

- 5. Laceration
Wound caused by crushing or ripping forces result in
tears or lacerations
Bleed less profusely, but more tissue damage
Often contaminated with germs, so the risk of infection
is high

- 6. Incised Wound
Wound caused by a clean surface cut from a sharp edged
object such as a razor
Blood vessels are cut straight across, so there is profuse
bleeding
Structures such as tendons or nerves may be damaged

- 7. Puncture Wounds
Wound caused by a pointed object like nail or needle
Has a small entry site but a deep track of internal damage
The risk of infection in this wound is very high

- 8. Stab Wound
This wound is a specific form of penetrating
trauma to the skin
Results from an object that is deeper than it is wide,
e.g., knife

- 9. Graze (Abrasion)
Wound in which the superficial layer of skin is
scrapped off, leaving a raw tender area
Often caused by a sliding fall or a friction burn
May contain embedded foreign particles that may
cause infection

- 10. Gunshot Wound
Wound which is caused by a bullet being driven
into or through the body
Cause serious internal injuries and sucking in
clothing and contaminants from the air
The entry wound may be small and clean; any
exit wound may be large and ragged
