FINAL YEAR PROJECT PRESENTATION BOOK OF FOLKLORE NUR ATHIRAH IYLIA 1071112294
Proposal Title: Book Of Folklore (interactive graphic story) Theme: old story new media Background: Malaysian local folklore which concerns about the folktales. The traditional folktales have been passed from generation to generation until now, it is enjoyed by Malaysian of all ages. Problems Identification: The good: preserving the folklore tales with enhancement of interactive multimedia installation toward new generation and being able to introduce uncommon folklore tales story to the people at the same time. The bad: universality in folk stories there can be a similarities in coincidence with folk literature from other part of the world. These similarities might happened because of the diffusion factors and the environment which almost the same. Some story will might have same storyline nor the title but there will be a twist according to the taste of the country itself.
Objectives:-To develop critical, innovative and inventive ways of thinking.-To expose people on the uncommon local story .-To provide an entertaining and interactive way of storytelling.-To preserved folklore tales culture in new generation.Motivation:I always love to goggling on the Internet and found out an unique interactive kinds of things furthermore in doing my installation which needed lots of ideation and inspiring source. Moreover, folk tales had been interest me lately. I precisely wanted to know more about Malaysian local folklore tales and so shockingly there's a lot of story in other state in Malaysia that i didn't even know as well as all story that been categorize as national story. My lecturer even ask me to point out the uncommon story. Well, its true rather than famous which people know how about doing the story people does not know much. Beside that, it will be sad to let this folklore been forgotten and unpreserved in the ageing world....
Research & Analysis What is folklore anyways?  Folklore is a universal form, a great symbolic literature which represents the folk. It is something that came from the masses, not something that is put over on the masses. Folk tales comprises various of categories such as fable, fairy, myth, legends. Research Recently, i did my research on 2D style from end/credit page of a movie and websites, some interactive pop-up books reference that will help me developing my idea, some platform for my installation Analysis My analysis is more on pop-up books since i'm doing interactive stories. What is pop-up book anyway? Well its origin from a book which been transform into kind of more exciting and interactive with adaptation of 2 dimensional movable books. Older version of pop-up book it only have image which pop out and little bit of storyline here and there but the evolution of technology now days has make pop-up book into digitalization medium where you can simulated the content by touch/navigation/controller. Even pop-up book can be means to educated or play games. As we can see from the example, we expect that through this technology can be enhanced in two ways. A narrative enabling the user to learn as they play and secondly, the mechanism allow for exploration that can be adopted.
Idea Development Mainly, my idea will be focusing on an interactive graphic story which include characters, storyline, graphic and sound effect. I will implement some sort of concept on exploring , preserving and enjoying for this project. Its a book with stories there will be illustration, sound and sensor navigation. My idea is to create 2D style concept for the design of the whole story. Furthermore, it will be projection style with some navigation for the user to interact.
Contextual Studies Uncommon National Folklore Story The story i choose for my FYP is "PERAHU KERAK NASI" or Rice Crusts Boat. Why? Because it is one of our national story and uncommon to us. According to monthly story embed on '366 Cerita Rakyat Malaysia' books, this story been discharge in April. Another purpose of choosing the story is because we often heard or know story of Outwitting Sang Kancil, Sang KancilMenolongKerbau, Sang KancilDenganHarimau...etc...so, Sang Kancil is famous fable story in Malaysia. Throughout whole story that i have read, this story involve Sang Kancil; mousedeer too....There also have its own moral value shown in the story. Following are the detail description of the story: Story title: 'PerahuKerakNasi' / Rice Crusts Boat Animal Involve: 5 animal - mousedeer, deer, wild boar, rhinoceros, male buffalo Moral Value : we should be fair as not to judge by size
Summary outline: Mousedeerfound a big rice crust boat at the edge of forest and put it by the river side. Deer, wild boar, rhinoceros, male buffalo reprimand mousedeer and jump inside the boat to follow the mousedeer. Mousedeer was shock but thankful at the same time that the boats does not breach. They stop at the bank of the river side and set up a small hut, make a fish trap for fishing. Then, they go fishing and came back with a lot of fish so, they divide the fish fairly and put on the smoked cinder leave it to cook. Next day, they went fishing again and return but shockingly all the fish had gone. Therefore, they came out with an idea each take turn to watch the smoked fish. They follow the turn but a weird thing happen, they see a giant eating their fish after that gone. However, when it comes to mousedeer turn, the giant came again for the fish but the mousedeer prohibit him to eat. The giant shock to see the brave mousedeer and thought of eating him but the giant loss its appetite after attracted to the mousedeer's eyes. The giant wanted an eyes like that, therefore the mousedeer told that his eyes was not original as it been painted with green rubber by his father. He kindly go get the green rubber in the forest and put on the giant's upper and down lids of his eyes. The giant's eyes attach each other while the mousedeer run away. The giant scream because he can't even open his eyes and grope run to the forest. The animal felt happy and jump into the crust boat with all the fish. They divide the fish but something were not right, the other animal divide the fish as follow by the size of the body. Since mousedeer was small he only get small amount of the fish. The mousedeer feel unsatisfied and kick the boat until breach and run to the forest. In the end no one get a fish. point out view: -mousedeer found crust boat -deer,wildboar,rhinoceros,male buffalo jump in the boat -set up small hut and make fish trap -went fishing, keep the fish in the hut -weird thing happen, each take turn to guard -giant appear -mousedeer get green rubber and put on the giant's eyes -giant scream and run away -the fish not equally divided -mousedeerunsatisfied;make the boat breach and run
Contextual Diagram Finalize idea, I've decided on doing my installation based on the idea, using a book to navigate the content which will be projected on top. The user must open the book and flip through each page to view the story. FLOW CHART intro Plot 1 Plot 2 Plot 3 Plot 4
