A Culture is an event ordinarily celebrated by
a community and centering on some characteristic aspect
of that community and its religion or traditions.
Different type of celebrations
 Festivals and celebrations are an
integral
 part of the culture of Bangladesh.
Prominent and widely celebrated
festivals are:
1. Pohela Boishakh,
2. Independence day
3. Eid ul-Fitur,
4. Eid ul-Adha,
5. Durga puja, and
6. Language Movement Day and other
national days.

 Pohela Boishakh is the first day of the Bengali calendar.
Pohela Boishakh or Bengali New Year is the traditional new year
day of the bengali people.
It is celebrated on 14th April as a national holiday in Bangladesh.
The Traditional greeting for Bengali New Year is Shubho
Nobobarsho which is means Happy New Year.
History :
For the reason of collect the tax Mughal Emperor Akbar invented a
new year, it was Bengla Calendar .
and the 1th day of Bengla calendar is Pohela Boishakh. Because
that was the time, the ARABIC or
It was basically made for collecting Agricultural products as a TAX.
Bengali Families clean their house and decorate
them with Alpana.
The day is marked with Singing, Procession and
Fairs.
Bangladeshi people eat festive foods on this day
like panta bhat, frying ilish and various special bharta.
Now it was declared an intangible Culture Heritage
by UNESCO IN 2016.
The day start in Dhaka at dawn with a tredition or Rabindranath
Tagores song ‘Esho He Boishakh” by Chhayanat under the banyan
tree at Ramna Batmul.
The Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University (Charukala) organised
a mass procession called Mangal Shobhajatra at dawn on the first
day of Bengali New year

The day is celebrated on February 13.
A colorful festival held to welcome
Bashanto (spring).
 Young girls wear reddish-yellow saris
with red border and decorated hairs
with flowers, and boys wear
traditional pajama and Punjabi.
 A good number of kids also get their
attractive faces painted with different
motifs including birds, national flag,
butterflies etc.

PAUSH PARBON
 In this season people celebrate Paush Parbon with Date
Juice and various kinds of Pithas.
 Kuli pitha, Khajer pitha, Vapa pitha, chitai pitha and
various date juice based pitha are remarkable.
Grihasto (farmer) invites their married daughter and sonof
law on the occasion.

Music, Dance and Drama
 The music and dance styles of Bangladesh may be divided
into three categories: classical, folk, and modern.
 The classical style has been influenced by other
prevalent classical forms of music and dances of the
Indian subcontinent.
The folk and tribal music and dance forms of Bangladesh are
of indigenous origin and rooted to the soil of Bangladesh.
 Most prevalent of folk songs and music traditions
include Bhatiali, Baul, Marfati, Murshidi, and
Bhawaiya.
 Lyricists like Lalon Shah, Hason Raja, Kangal Harinath,
Romesh Shill, Abbas Uddin, and many unknown anonymous
lyricists have enriched the tradition of folk songs of
Bangladesh. 12
Family life in Bangladesh

National dresses for Bangladeshi men are Lungi and Panjabi and for
Women are saree. Now a day’s changes are seen. People usually love
to wear western dresses and women of Bangladesh are seen to wear
Salwar kameez and Some of Youngs are seen to wear jeans T-shirts,
tops, etc.
Food Tradition of Bangladesh
 The region is famous for its illusive culinary tradition, and
delicious food, dessert and snacks.
 Plain rice is the staple food and it is served with a variety of
vegetables either fried or curry or even Bharta, egg, thick
lentil soups, and fish or meat.
 As Dessert Misti Dhohi, flat Chana, Sandesh, Rasgolla, Ras
Malai, Kalojam, Pudding etc are unique and Kheer is also a
great tasty milk based dessert.
Traditional drinks are tea, Lassi, Sugarcane Juice, Lime and
Date juices, Green Coconut Water are mentionable.

Traditional Marriage Ceremony in
Bangladesh
Settle marriage is popular in Bangladesh.
 Once the guardians (only) of bride and
grooms settled such relation and the bride
and groom’s opinions had minor priority.
 Now a day the situations has been
improved and given the priority of bride
and bride groom likes.
 They invite all friends, neighbors and
relatives as much possible on the
weeding festival.
 Bangladeshi weeding ceremony has its
own tradition and customs for days

Different types of arts are crafts seen in Bangladesh.
Weaving, pottery, and terracotta, etc. are traditional in
Bangladesh. Women of Bangladesh makes Nakshi Katha. Arts in
Rickshaw is also popular in Bangladesh.Folk Theater, Jatra, etc. are
common in rural side of Bangladesh.
Eid Ul-Fitr
Muslim festivals follow a lunar
calendar.
After a month long fasting in
Ramadan, the holy festival eid
ul-fitr comes with great joy.
Eid ul-fitr is the most important
religious festival for the majority
Muslims community.
The celebration of eid ul-fitr has
become a part of the culture of
Bangladesh.
People shop new dress and
other necessary items much on
the occasion. 17
Eid Ul-Adha
 The celebration of Eid Ul-Adha is
similar to Eid Ul-Fitr in many ways.
The only big difference is the
qurbani or sacrifice of domestic
animals on Eid Ul-Adha.
 Numerous temporary marketplace
of different sizes called hot operate
in the big cities for sale of qurbani
animals.
 In the morning on the eid day,
immediately after the prayer,
affluent people thank God for the
animal, and then sacrifice it.
 After the qurbani, a large portion of
the meat is given to the poor
people.

Other Islamic occasions

As like other Islamic Countries in the world, Bangladeshi
people also celebrate another different Islamic event e.g.
Milad un Nabi ( Birthdate of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad
sm. ), Muharram, Chand Raat (The night before Eid), Shab-
e-Baraat, Bishwa Ijtema (The Social Gathering of People to
pray ), etc. This occasions and traditions are a sign of the
unity of individuals.
Hinduism

Hindus are the second largest community of Bangladesh.
Government people of Bangladesh, as well as general
people, do respects equally other religion and religious
people of Bangladesh. Like Islamic festival, Bangladeshi
Hindus also get the public holiday on their significant
occasions.
Durga puja
Durga puja is the biggest
celebration of hindu community.
On the occasion, The Debi Durga
status astride a lion, with her ten
hands holding ten different
weapons, are placed in not only
regular hindu temple but also
enormous temporary stages.
Hindu community shop new dress
on the occasion.
It is new a days one of the most
public gathering occasion.
Puja stage is visited not only hindu
community but also all classes of
people of Bangladesh. 21
Other occasions of Hinduism

Hindu Rituals like Swarsati Puja, Jagodatri Puja, Lokkhi
Puja, Janmashtami, (Birth Date of Lord Krishna ), etc. are
observed among the Hindu community. Bengali Culture is
mostly developed from Hindus. So, different festivals are
celebrated nationally.
Buddhism and Christian

Buddhist and Christians are minor in Bangladesh. But Buddha
Purnima, A major festival of Buddhist, Christmas day is
nationally observed. In those days, Bangladesh has public
holidays. Though most of the people of Bangladesh are
Muslims, second largest community is the Hindu, but people of
other religion get equal respects and rights while celebrating their
different religious occasion.

(International Mother Language day), 26th March
(Independence day), 16th December (Victory day),

Bangladesh is the only nation in the world who sacrifices blood for
the sake of Mother’s tongue. It was 21st February in 1952; Bangladeshi
people start the movement against the government of Pakistan for
the Bengali Language. In that action, Salem, Rafique, Barkat, Shafiul
and many others sacrifice their lives. At last Pakistan government is
forced to declare Bengali, as a state language of Bangladesh.
After that day, to commemorate the sacrifice of our national heroes
in this day is observed. In the year of 1999, United Nations General
Assembly provides recognition of the day and UNESCO first
declared this day as “International Mother Language Day.”
16th December Victory day of
Bangladesh
 After nine month war, sacrificing 3 millions of lives and a massive
destruction of the Pakistani Army, Bangladesh won the victory.
This is the victory day.Under the leading of Father of the nation
Banga Bondu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladeshi people have
got the victory. A new country on the world map appeared. Yes,
this was Bangladesh. It was 16th December 1971.

26th March (Independence Day)
 25th March 1971, the invader Pakistani army killed more
than two hundred thousands of people in one night. In
this genocide, general people, women, and children are
killed brutally. After that liberation war of Bangladesh
started. It was the eve of Liberation war. We mourn for
that day. This is the national holiday.

There are different ethnic groups in Bangladesh,like

It was 21st February in 1952; Bangladeshi people start the movement against the government of Pakistan for the Bengali Language. In that action, Salem, Rafique, Barkat, Shafiul and many others sacrifice their lives. At last Pakistan government is forced to declare Bengali, as a state language of Bangladesh. After that day, to commemorate the sacrifice of our national heroes in this day is observed. In the year of 1999, United Nations General Assembly provides recognition of the day and UNESCO first declared this day as “International Mother Language Day.”
  • 27. 16th December Victory day of Bangladesh  After nine month war, sacrificing 3 millions of lives and a massive destruction of the Pakistani Army, Bangladesh won the victory.
