Academic Project
Higher Order Compact Finite Difference Methods
Under this project I have worked on Higher Order Compact (HOC) Finite Difference methods for
Convection-Diffusion-Reaction equations. Before the scheme has been developed for Convection-
Diffusion problem can be found in literature, my project work is an extension work to study more
general type equations. In this project I have developed scheme for one-dimensional and two
dimensional convection-diffusion-reaction equations with constant and variable coefficients. The
general scheme is developed for both 1-D and 2-D, codes are written for solving problems with
Convection-diffusion-reaction terms in C language under Linux environment. With the help of
these codes output is recorded for different convection coefficients. The error plot is drawn for
different values of convection coefficient, the plots are drawn with the help of Matlab.
Further, I did analysis of the developed schemes in different directions like in stability, consistency
And complexity of the numerical algorithm. I have solved different example problems with
different variations diffusion, convection and reaction parameters. In all case I found the HOC
4. scheme is highly accurate and stable, also the computational time is very less than existing
schemes. I obtained the high accuracy of scheme without compromising the computational cost
i.e., after discretization the coefficient matrix of the linear systems are tridiagonal or block
tridiagonal form. To solve the discretized tridiagonal or block-tridiagonal matrix, Thomas
algorithm is used. In our numerical experiments, compact finite difference method is compared
with upwind scheme and central difference scheme. The results show that the compact finite
difference scheme is highly efficient, accurate and stable method
