The iSCSI service on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 was unable to start, even after issuing the start command. This was because in RHEL 6, the iSCSI service starts lazily by default if the root file system is not on an iSCSI device or nodes are not marked for automatic startup. The issue was resolved by using the iscsiadm command to discover targets, which causes the iSCSI service and modules to initialize, or by explicitly forcing the iSCSI service to start.
