 Embedded Innovation Lab provides “final year embedded system projects

 We are living in a very mobile society so light utility vehicles (LUV) like bikes
and cars are becoming very popular means of independent transportation for
short distances. Petrol and diesel which have been the main sources of fuel in
the history of transportation, are becoming more expensive and impractical
(especially from an environmental standpoint). Such factors are leading
vehicle manufacturers to develop vehicles fueled by alternative energies.
When at present level of technological development fuel-less flying (like
birds) i.e., flying based on the use of bio-energy and air power in the
atmosphere seems to be almost impossible for human beings then engineers
are fascinated at least with the enormous power associated with the human
friendly as well as tested source of energy (i.e., air) to make air-powered
vehicles as one possible alternative. Engineers are directing their sincere
efforts to make use of air as an energy source to run the LUVs which will
make future bikes and light/small cars running with air power for daily
routine distances and the travel will be free from pollution and cost effective.
History or Origin:-
 Mankind has been making use of uncompressed airpower from
centuries in different application viz., windmills, sailing, balloon car,
hot air balloon flying and hang gliding etc.
 The use of compressed air for storing energy is a method that is not
only efficient and clean, but also economical and has been used since
the 19th century to power mine locomotives, and was previously the
basis of naval torpedo propulsion.

Construction Details:
Working of Compressed Air Vehicle:-
 In principle the technology is very similar to the internal
combustion system -compressed air is used to drive a
piston in a barrel. Final year ece projects in

 It compress air to high pressures in a staged process.
 It simply reverse the process -decompress the air in
stages and in so doing efficiently release energy at each
point in the chain.

 Compressed air is air kept under a pressure that is greater than
atmospheric pressure.
 The Density of air is 1000 Kg/m3 at 1 atm(1.01325 bar).
 Air at 30 MPa (4,500 psi) contains about 50 Wh of energy per liter (and
normally weighs 372g per liter).
 In order to increase energy density, some systems may use greater
compressibility than air when it transitions gases that can be liquefied
or solidified. "CO2 offers far from gaseous to supercritical form."
 If 1.0 m3 of ambient air is very slowly compressed into a 5 L bottle at
20 MPa (200 bar), the potential energy stored is 530 kJ.
Advantages:-
In comparison to petrol or diesel powered vehicles “air powered vehicles” have
following advantages:
 Refueling can be done at home using an air compressor or at service stations. The
energy required for compressing air is produced at large centralized plants, making it
less costly and more effective to manage vehicle on emissions than from individual
vehicles.
 Compressed air engines reduce the cost of vehicle production, because there is no
need to build a cooling system, spark plugs, starter motor, or mufflers.
 The rate of self-discharge is very low opposed to batteries that deplete their charge
slowly over time. Therefore, the vehicle may be left unused for longer periods of time
than electric vehicles.
 Expansion of the compressed air lowers its temperature; this may be exploited for use
as air conditioning.
 Reduction or elimination of hazardous chemicals such as gasoline or battery
acids/metals
 Some mechanical configurations may allow energy recovery during braking by
compressing and storing air.
 Reduced vehicle weight is the principal efficiency factor of
compressed-air cars. Furthermore, they are mechanically more
rudimentary than traditional vehicles as many conventional parts
of the engine may be omitted. Some plans include motors built
into the hubs of each wheel, thereby removing the necessity of a
transmission, drive axles and differentials. A four passenger
vehicle weighing less than 800 pounds (360 kg) is a reasonable
design goal.
 A range of 200 kilometers by the end of the year at a cost of Rs.
130 per fill-up.
 Expansion of the compressed air lowers in temperature this may
be exploited for use as air conditioning. 
 Compressed-air vehicles emit no pollutants.
 The technology is simple to achieve with low tech materials.
This would mean that developing countries, and rapidly growing
countries like  India, could easily implement the technology.
Safety For Humans:-
 As compressed air is not combustible as the other fuels, so its very
safe to carry a compressed air tank then a CNG tank, Gasoline tank
or any other combustible or toxic fuel tank.
Why A Compressed Air Vehicle:-
Compressed-air vehicles are comparable in many ways even to
electric vehicles and their potential advantages over electric vehicles
include:

unconstrained by the degradation problems associated with current
battery systems.
 Much like electrical vehicles, air powered vehicles would ultimately be
powered through the electrical grid which makes it easier to focus on
reducing pollution from one source, as opposed to the millions of
vehicles on the road.
 Compressed-air tanks can be disposed of or recycled with less
pollution than batteries.
 This one also we doing “final year embedded system projects in
chennai,bangalore,vijayawada.” The tank may be able to be refilled
more often and in less time than batteries can be recharged, with
refueling rates comparable to liquid fuels.
 The tanks used in a compressed air motor have a longer lifespan in
comparison with batteries, which, after a while suffer from a reduction
in performance.

Conclusion:
 Compressed air for vehicle propulsion is already being explored and
now air powered vehicles are being developed as a more fuel-efficient
means of transportation.
 Some automobile companies are further exploring compressed air
hybrids and compressed fluids to store energy for vehicles which might
point the way for the development of a cost effective air powered
vehicles design.
 Unfortunately there are still serious problems to be sorted out before
air powered vehicles become a reality for common use but there is a
hope that with the development in science & technology well
supported by the environmental conscious attitudeattitude and need to replace
costly transportation methods, air-powered vehicles will definitely see
the light of the day.

Petrol and diesel which have been the main sources of fuel in the history of transportation, are becoming more expensive and impractical (especially from an environmental standpoint). Such factors are leading vehicle manufacturers to develop vehicles fueled by alternative energies. When at present level of technological development fuel-less flying (like birds) i.e., flying based on the use of bio-energy and air power in the atmosphere seems to be almost impossible for human beings then engineers are fascinated at least with the enormous power associated with the human friendly as well as tested source of energy (i.e., air) to make air-powered vehicles as one possible alternative. Engineers are directing their sincere efforts to make use of air as an energy source to run the LUVs which will make future bikes and light/small cars running with air power for daily routine distances and the travel will be free from pollution and cost effective.

  • 5. Working of Compressed Air Vehicle:-  In principle the technology is very similar to the internal combustion system -compressed air is used to drive a piston in a barrel. Advantages:- In comparison to petrol or diesel powered vehicles “air powered vehicles” have following advantages:  Refueling can be done at home using an air compressor or at service stations. The energy required for compressing air is produced at large centralized plants, making it less costly and more effective to manage vehicle on emissions than from individual vehicles.  Compressed air engines reduce the cost of vehicle production, because there is no need to build a cooling system, spark plugs, starter motor, or mufflers.  The rate of self-discharge is very low opposed to batteries that deplete their charge slowly over time. Therefore, the vehicle may be left unused for longer periods of time than electric vehicles.  Expansion of the compressed air lowers its temperature; this may be exploited for use as air conditioning.  Reduction or elimination of hazardous chemicals such as gasoline or battery acids/metals  Some mechanical configurations may allow energy recovery during braking by compressing and storing air.
  • 11.  Reduced vehicle weight is the principal efficiency factor of compressed-air cars. Furthermore, they are mechanically more rudimentary than traditional vehicles as many conventional parts of the engine may be omitted. Some plans include motors built into the hubs of each wheel, thereby removing the necessity of a transmission, drive axles and differentials. A four passenger vehicle weighing less than 800 pounds (360 kg) is a reasonable design goal.  A range of 200 kilometers by the end of the year at a cost of Rs. 130 per fill-up.  Expansion of the compressed air lowers in temperature this may be exploited for use as air conditioning.   Compressed-air vehicles emit no pollutants.  The technology is simple to achieve with low tech materials. This would mean that developing countries, and rapidly growing countries like  India, could easily implement the technology.
