3. WHAT IS IT?
Emotional intelligence refers to someone’s ability to
use emotion proactively, both his/her own emotions
and those of the people around them, both
consciously and subconsciously, as a tool for
improving reasoning and decision-making. Emotions
are present at all stages of the life cycle, which is why,
to live a better, whatever stage of life we are at, it is
worth learning to control them and also to integrate
them into our daily routines. Emotional education will
help us do this.

9. SELF-AWARENESS
Self-awareness is the capacity to identify one’s own
strengths and weaknesses so that the former are
capitalised and the latter are reduced. Frankness about
the areas of weakness, being comfortable with oneself
and having “a strong, positive sense of self-esteem"
characterise people who have self-awareness. Part of
self-esteem involves listening to oneself before anyone
else, it involves someone’s innate capacity to make
decisions, thereby impacting all aspects of performance.

10. SELF-REGULATION
Self-regulation is related with self-awareness, but it
more specifically describes the ability to control
emotions, whether negative or positive, with a view to
having behaviour more appropriate for professional
practice and activity.
People who control their feelings and impulses are
capable of creating an atmosphere of
trust and fairness.

11. MOTIVATION
Motivation is the engine for action, for life. This skill
drives us to keep improving, despite setbacks, and it
helps us to take advantage of life’s opportunities and to
commit to what we wish to achieve. It represents the
wish for achievement - enthusiasm, drive, ambition -
irrespective of obstacles.

12. EMPATHY
This is the ability to recognise and understand other
people’s emotions. This ability will help us to properly
interpret the emotions of other people and also to
provide them with the support or care that they need at
any given moment.
What’s more, empathy will help us to establish close,
high-quality links with healthy relationships, as it will
enable us to establish bonds of respect, understanding
and trust.

13. SOCIAL SKILLS
These are necessary to form healthy bonds through our
interpersonal relationships. This is why educating
through emotional intelligence means educating by
prioritising social skills as an important part of
development. This skill will allow you to interact
successfully in society.

Teaching them that when you have a problem, the first thing to do is to reflect and then
to act calmly without hurting other people to solve the problem. Teaching the child how
to deal with negative emotions.
PRACTICAL IDEAS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT
OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Teaching children to put a name to and recognise feelings and/or emotions. Games,
stories, cards with drawings etc. are all very useful.
Using the storytelling space for children to identify the various emotions of the
characters. Helping them to draw the faces of the characters, illustrating the emotion
they are feeling at different points throughout the story.

16. Relating facial gestures with feelings: for example, if you laugh, tell the child that this
feeling is happiness. If you show a sad face, it's because you don’t like what’s happening.
It is vital for children to be able to learn to “read” the faces of the people they interact
with to understand how they are feeling.
Letting children express their feelings and emotions. As an adult, listening and expressing
your own. Self-knowledge and self-awareness, the ability to know what is happening in
our body and what we are feeling, are two of the basic foundations for developing
Emotional Intelligence.
