Traditional v/s Smart system
• Designed for certain performance requirements e.g. load,
speed, life span.
• Unable to modify its specifications if there is a change of
environment.
Traditional
• Can accommodate unpredictable environments.
• Can meet exacting performance requirement.
• Offer more efficient solutions for a wide range of
applications.
Smart system
Smart Materials
Smart materials are material that has to respond to stimuli and
environmental changes and to activate their function according these
changes.
The several external stimuli sensitive for Smart Materials are:-
 Temperature
 Pressure
 Light
 Electric flow
 Magnetic flow
 Electric fields
 Magnetic fields
Why smart Sensors and Actuators ?
 Real time response
 Exploit functional properties
 Minimal effect on structural properties
 Reduction in weight
 Less power consumption
 Better reliability
Smart Materials as Sensors &
Actuators

Thermal Stimulus
Direct Effect
(Sensor)
Reverse Effect
(Actuator)
• All Piezoelectric Materials
• Magnetostrictive Materials
• Optical Fiber
• Ferroelectrics Perovskites, Piezoceramics
• Terfenol-D, Amorphous Met-Glasses
• Terfenol-D, Amorphous Met-GlassesS
Types of Smart Materials
 Piezoelectric materials
 Magneto restrictive materials
 Active smart polymer
 Shape memory alloy
Piezoelectric Materials
Generate an electric charge in response to applied
mechanical stress and vice versa.
(a) A piezoelectric–
composite-based
damping system for a
vertical fin of the F/A-18;
(b) MFC actuator for a
small projectile fin; (c) it
is motion mimicking
birds’ flight (d) A smart
flapping wing actuated
by an MFC.
Magneto- Restrictive Materials
Change in dimension of ferromagnetic material in
magnetic field and vice versa.
TALON (Tactical Acoustic Littoral Ocean Network) sonar system uses
Magneto strictive Terfenol-D for under-water submarine detection
Active smart polymer
 These are high-performance polymers that change
according to the environment they are in.
 Sensitive to temperature, humidity, pH, wavelength,
intensity of light electrical or magnetic field, etc.
Shape memory alloy
 Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are materials that can hold
different shapes at various temperatures.
 They can be deformed and returned to their original shape by
heating, e.g., NiTiNOL
Application of Smart Materials
 Structural Health Monitoring
 Self-Repair
 In the Field of Defense and Space
 Biomedical Applications
 Reducing Waste
 Health
Conclusion
The technologies using smart materials are useful for both new
and existing process and technologies. Future application by
adaptation of Smart Materials in civil engineering, medicine,
transportation, space and other areas can greatly boost the
development and also quality of life. Of the many emerging
technologies available the few described here need further
research to evolve the design guidelines of systems.
