3. Levonorgestrel is a second-generation progestin. It is
the most widely prescribed birth control progestin
worldwide.
4. PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
• Oral contraceptives of the combination type act by a multiplicity of
mechanisms.
• Ovulation is inhibited by suppression of gonadotropin release,
particularly the mid-cycle peaks and the viscosity of the cervical
mucus is increased impairing sperm penetration, and an
endometrium, less receptive for implantation is formed.
5. INDICATIONS
• A low dose oral contraceptive pill.
• OVOREST is indicated for fertility control in women and
for the control of cases of dysfunctional uterine bleeding
(changes in hormones that directly affect the
menstruation cycle, the condition is called
dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB).)
• Symptomatic treatment of primary dysmenorrhea
(painful periods) where contraception is also desired.
6. CONTRA-INDICATIONS
• Impaired liver function
• Severe Migraine
• Coronary-artery disease and undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.
• Epilepsy, asthma, hypertension, depression or states in which fluid
retention occur.
• Must be avoided in known or suspected pregnancy.
7. DOSAGE
• OVOREST tablets must be taken as directed and at intervals not
exceeding 24 hours.
• Patients should be instructed to take the tablets at the same time
every day, preferably after the evening meal or at bedtime.
• During the first cycle of administration, the patient is instructed to
take one white tablet daily for 21 consecutive days beginning on Day
1 of her menstrual cycle, i.e. the first day of bleeding.
• One brown inert tablet is taken daily for the next 7 consecutive days.
• Withdrawal bleeding should usually occur 2 to 4 days after the last
white tablet is taken.
