Forty schools in Siraha district have been found of defalcating government funds by faking
number of students.
According to resource person, Baidanath Yadav, principals of the respective schools had shown
a total number of 1,687 students but the number does not match the original record.
“Twenty-six primary schools, six lower secondary schools, three secondary schools and five
other higher secondary schools are under our scrutiny. The number of students they have shown
does not match the data that we have,” said Yadav. [BREAK]
Many schools across the country, mostly in the rural areas, have been using this method to
misuse the budget allocated by the government. Millions of rupees are set aside for education
every year, with most of it going toward offering scholarships and purchasing books and
stationeries for poor students.
Showing fake numbers of students, principals of these schools have already pocketed at least Rs
2 million. I am sure we will be able to unearth the involvement of more schools if we continue
this investigation,” said Yadav.
The fraud came to light during a recent investigation of schools operating in the Pokharbhind
area.
“There is a vast difference in the number of students enrolled and the students taking
examinations,” said Yadav.
DEO offers stipends, scholarships and funding to the deserving schools on the basis of the
number of students registered during the admission. As per the directive of Department of
Education, DEO should only offer textbooks as grant but DEO has been offering more than that.
Few of the schools under DEO’s scanner are Lalita Secondary School at Laxmipur Patari VDC-
3, Janak Higher Secondary School at Mohanpur VDC, Suman Education Academy and New
Children English Boarding School at Sukhipur VDC-3.
