1. Keep the harvested medicinal plants materials clean by removing dirty foreign
substances.
2. If washing is necessary, do it as quickly as possible after harvesting.
3. Dry the plant materials under the shade. If plant materials are succulent, cut them
into a small pieces.
4. Store dried materials in colored plastic or glass bottles properly covered and place
it in a cool and dry place away from sunlight.
There are various ways of preparing medicinal plants for effective and beneficial use. To
ensure effective use of medicinal plants in treatment of ailments, here are some guidelines
recommended by the DOH:
5. Properly label the container with the name of the plant and the date it was
collected.
6. Well dried and well stored plant materials can be used up to six months after
collection.
7. Discard the plant materials if there are molds or other signs which show that they
are rotten.
8. Observe cleanliness in the preparation of medicinal plants.
9. In the absence of weighing scale, use tablespoon to determine the amount of plant
material needed.
10. Use only earthen ware pots, enamel, or any utensil except the aluminum kind.
11. Decoctions are prepared by boiling the plant materials in a given amount of water
for five to fifteen minutes.
12. Infusions are prepared by soaking the plant material in a given amount of water
for fifteen to twenty minutes.
13. Use the plants as recommended.
14. Use the medicinal plants according to the dosage and direction recommended.
15. For each symptom of disease, use only one kind of medicinal
plant at a time.
16. Stop the use of the medicinal plant should any untoward
reactions or side effects occur.
17. If there are no signs of improvements after two to three
administrations, consult a physician immediately

part in the evening.
• Fever
-Drink each part every
4 hours.
REMINDERS:
Be cautious in using other
species of lagundi (with 1 or 3
leaves)
Use:
Gas Pain & Fever
• Divide decoction in 3 parts.
• Drink each part in the morning, at
noon, and at night.
Joint Pains, rheumatism
• Fresh leaves may also be pounded.
• Heat them slightly.
• Apply on affected joints at night
or any time pain is felt.
Dizziness
• Crush some fresh leaves
• Have the dizzy person smell the
crushed leaves
Toothache
• Pound enough fresh leaves.
• Squeeze the juice out.
• Wet a piece of cotton in the juice.
• Insert the cotton in the cavity of
aching tooth.
Use:
-Divide decoction into
3 parts
-Drink each part in
the morning, at noon,
and at night.
REMINDERS:
This is not a treatment for
kidney or urinary infection.
Use:
-Divide decoction into

-Drink one part every
4 hours.
REMINDER:
Can be used as mouthwash for
strong teeth.
Use:
For Cleaning Wounds
-Pour the decoction over the wound 2
times a day.
For Mouth Infection & Swollen Gums
-Rinse mouth and gargle with the
decoction.
-Do this 3 times a day.
For Toothache
-Take 2 fresh guava shoots, wash them
well.
- Chew and allow them to settle on
aching tooth.
For Dizziness
-Crush some fresh shoots.
-Have the dizzy person smell the
shoots.
For Cleaning Teeth
-Wash the fresh shoots thoroughly.
- Brush teeth with the shoots.
-Reach as many teeth as possible.
-Do this after each meal.
REMINDER:
Select the native guava tree
because only this tree has been
used in the research and found
effective for the treatment of
the ailments as mentioned
earlier.
Use:

times a day.

irritation of the stomach and
intestines.

-Pound the needed quantity of
cloves of fresh garlic.
- Apply directly on the affected
part at night or whenever pain is
left.

-Heat a little, if desired.
