2. The task ahead for President-elect Donald Trump when it
comes to keeping the United States safe from terror is much
more than just ‘building a wall’. The global rise in radical
Islam continues to be a threat across Europe and in the US.
San Bernadino Attack
3. The rise of radical Islam in the US was never more clear than
with the San Bernadino attack. The shooters, allegedly inspired
by ISIS killed 14 people and injured 21 in their attack. The 45th
President of the United States has a challenge ahead to ensure
domestic safety from an international perspective.
4. International Complacency
Under Obama
The current administration has had a relatively low
profile in the international political arena. Mounting
turmoil in the Middle East has led to disastrous
consequences in Libya, Syria and Iraq. While
misguided intervention in other areas has led to an
increase in terror threats on US soil. The reactivation
of Iran’s nuclear program has led to widespread
protest, leaving allies in the region, including Israel, at
a loss.
5. Recognizing Radical Islam
To attempt to smooth the way and appease the
terror threat, the current government may have
underestimated the goal of radical Islam, and its
intentions. In countries that have been plunged into
war in the last 5 years, Syria for example. It is
precisely he collapse of the rule of law that has led to
the rise of ISIS and radical Islamic fundamental
groups hell bent on restoring the way of Shariah.
6. Next Steps for the United States – dealing with
the United Nations
One of the stumbling blocks to the process and due process in the Middle
East is the United Nations General Assembly and U.N. Human Rights
Council. Regularly criticizing small independent democracies like Israel for
upping self-defence measures while vetoing military action in countries
like Syria, the United Nations has become an ineffective, corrupt and
unfair body that impedes real progress in the fight against terror.
