2019 HIGHLIGHTS
CONTROLLED-LOOP MANAGEMENT
PVC waste recycling within the VinylPlus® framework reached 771,313 tonnes.
In September, VinylPlus officially joined the EU Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA),
the multi-stakeholder platform aimed at delivering on the circular economy
for plastics and substantially increasing the use of recycled plastics in
new products. Since December, VinylPlus is chairing the CPA Construction
Working Group.
Cooperation with EU authorities continued to address the issue of legacy
additives (substances that are no longer used in new PVC products but that
can be present in recycled PVC).

The ECVM Industry Charters for
the production of VCM and PVC
resins were updated
and unified. The PVC resin
industry is committed to
achieving full compliance with
the updated Charter by the
end of 2021.
SUSTAINABLE USE OF ADDITIVES
After the critical review by the University of Manchester, UK, the validation of
the Additive Sustainability Footprint criteria (https://vinylplus.eu/asf) can be
considered as fully achieved.
Through ongoing research and innovation, the plasticisers industry continues
to adapt to market and regulatory demands, while keeping its commitment to
safe products and their sustainable use.

PVC is one of the most widely used polymers in the world.
PVC continues to make life safer and more comfortable through its
use in construction, water distribution, automobiles, cabling,
smart & credit cards, packaging, fashion & design, sport,
agriculture, telecommunications, medical devices
and a wide array of other areas and products.
PVC is intrinsically a ‘low carbon’ plastic,
it is extremely durable and cost-efficient.
PVC helps preserve resources and
energy, and, at the end of its life,
it can be recycled without losing
essential qualities.

SUSTAINABLE USE OF ENERGY AND RAW MATERIALS
PVC resin producers and converters continue their effort to reduce their
energy consumption and to shift to renewable energy sources.
Non-fossil-based PVC additives, compounds and applications are starting
to become available. Commercially viable bio-attributed certified PVC resins
were launched on the market by two ECVM member companies.

SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS
VinylPlus contributed as a panellist in a side event of
the Fourth Session of the United Nations Environment
Assembly (UNEA-4).
With the theme Accelerating Innovation, the 7th
VinylPlus
Sustainability Forum, in Prague, Czech Republic,
focused on the challenges and opportunities presented by new technologies
in shaping the PVC sector’s future in the context of the circular economy.
The VinylPlus® Product Label, a sustainability scheme for PVC products
in the Building and Construction sector (productlabel.vinylplus.eu),
has been officially validated in Italy by Accredia. To date, 112 products
and product systems manufactured by 10 companies in 18 European
sites have been certified.
The strategic partnerships with sports organisations developed by
VinylPlus in 2019, proved to be an extremely effective means to raise
awareness of the European PVC industry’s contribution to the circular
economy and the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and to build
new relationships with institutions, authorities and the youth at local,
regional and global level.
VinylPlus is registered as a SMART partnership on the UN Partnerships
for the SDGs platform.

VINYLPLUS
VinylPlus is the 10-year Voluntary Commitment to sustainable development by the European PVC industry. The VinylPlus
programme was developed through open dialogue with stakeholders, including industry, NGOs, regulators, civil society
representatives and PVC users. Five key challenges have been identified for PVC on the basis of The Natural Step System
Conditions for a Sustainable Society.
The regional scope of the programme is the EU-27 plus Norway, Switzerland and the UK.
Through the VinylPlus initiative, the European PVC industry is creating a long-term sustainability framework for the entire
PVC value chain. It aims to:
recycle 800,000 tonnes of PVC per year by 2020,
900,000 tonnes by 2025 and at least one million
tonnes by 2030
promote a sustainable use of additives
improve PVC products sustainability and their
contribution to sustainable development
reduce progressively GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions
as well as energy and resource consumption along the
entire production chain
move towards a low-carbon circular economy
build sustainability awareness along the value chain
and among stakeholders.

  • 1. VINYLPLUS AT A GLANCE THE EUROPEAN PVC INDUSTRY’S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
  • 2. VINYLPLUS’ CHALLENGE 1 CONTRIBUTES TO SDGs: TARGET 8.4 TARGET 12.5 TARGET 13.1 TARGET 9.5 2019 HIGHLIGHTS CONTROLLED-LOOP MANAGEMENT PVC waste recycling within the VinylPlus® framework reached 771,313 tonnes. In September, VinylPlus officially joined the EU Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA), the multi-stakeholder platform aimed at delivering on the circular economy for plastics and substantially increasing the use of recycled plastics in new products. Since December, VinylPlus is chairing the CPA Construction Working Group. Cooperation with EU authorities continued to address the issue of legacy additives (substances that are no longer used in new PVC products but that can be present in recycled PVC). 2001 2002 2019 2018 2017 2016 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 PVC RECYCLED WITHIN THE VINYLPLUS FRAMEWORK 771,313 2019 Cables Pipes & fittings Flexible PVC and films (including roofing and waterproofing membranes, flooring, coated fabrics, flexible and rigid films) Window profiles & related products 5.7 million tonnes of PVC recycled since 2000 11.4 million tonnes of CO2 saved since 2000 The underpinning value of the combined social, economic and environmental pillars is vital; sustainable development is about more than durability. • 3. ORGANOCHLORINE EMISSIONS No transport accidents in Europe with VCM release. The ECVM Industry Charters for the production of VCM and PVC resins were updated and unified. The PVC resin industry is committed to achieving full compliance with the updated Charter by the end of 2021. SUSTAINABLE USE OF ADDITIVES After the critical review by the University of Manchester, UK, the validation of the Additive Sustainability Footprint criteria (https://vinylplus.eu/asf) can be considered as fully achieved. Through ongoing research and innovation, the plasticisers industry continues to adapt to market and regulatory demands, while keeping its commitment to safe products and their sustainable use. VINYLPLUS’ CHALLENGE 2 CONTRIBUTES TO SDGs: TARGET 1.5 TARGET 8.8 TARGET 12.4 TARGET 9.4 TARGET 14.1 TARGET 3.9 VINYLPLUS’ CHALLENGE 3 CONTRIBUTES TO SDGs: TARGET 6.3 TARGET 12.4 PVC is one of the most widely used polymers in the world. PVC continues to make life safer and more comfortable through its use in construction, water distribution, automobiles, cabling, smart & credit cards, packaging, fashion & design, sport, agriculture, telecommunications, medical devices and a wide array of other areas and products. PVC is intrinsically a ‘low carbon’ plastic, it is extremely durable and cost-efficient. PVC helps preserve resources and energy, and, at the end of its life, it can be recycled without losing essential qualities. • 4. SUSTAINABLE USE OF ENERGY AND RAW MATERIALS PVC resin producers and converters continue their effort to reduce their energy consumption and to shift to renewable energy sources. Non-fossil-based PVC additives, compounds and applications are starting to become available. Commercially viable bio-attributed certified PVC resins were launched on the market by two ECVM member companies. VINYLPLUS’ CHALLENGE 4 CONTRIBUTES TO SDGs: TARGET 7.3 TARGET 12.2 TARGET 13.1 TARGET 8.4 VINYLPLUS’ CHALLENGE 5 CONTRIBUTES TO SDGs: TARGET 3.9 TARGET 5.1 TARGET 12.6 TARGET 12.7 TARGET 12.8 TARGET 12.A TARGET 8.8 TARGET 17.7 TARGET 17.16 TARGET 17.17 TARGET 4.4 TARGET 4.7 More information can be found in the VinylPlus Progress Report 2020, downloadable from www.vinylplus.eu. SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS VinylPlus contributed as a panellist in a side event of the Fourth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-4). With the theme Accelerating Innovation, the 7th VinylPlus Sustainability Forum, in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the challenges and opportunities presented by new technologies in shaping the PVC sector’s future in the context of the circular economy. The VinylPlus® Product Label, a sustainability scheme for PVC products in the Building and Construction sector (productlabel.vinylplus.eu), has been officially validated in Italy by Accredia. To date, 112 products and product systems manufactured by 10 companies in 18 European sites have been certified. The strategic partnerships with sports organisations developed by VinylPlus in 2019, proved to be an extremely effective means to raise awareness of the European PVC industry’s contribution to the circular economy and the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and to build new relationships with institutions, authorities and the youth at local, regional and global level. VinylPlus is registered as a SMART partnership on the UN Partnerships for the SDGs platform.
  • 5. Strong governance and accountability Involvement of the entire value chain, 200 partners across Europe Over €110 million industry investment in sustainability in Europe since 2000 Concrete and measurable targets and deadlines Research and innovation Stakeholder engagement, transparency and dialogue VINYLPLUS VinylPlus is the 10-year Voluntary Commitment to sustainable development by the European PVC industry. The VinylPlus programme was developed through open dialogue with stakeholders, including industry, NGOs, regulators, civil society representatives and PVC users. Five key challenges have been identified for PVC on the basis of The Natural Step System Conditions for a Sustainable Society. The regional scope of the programme is the EU-27 plus Norway, Switzerland and the UK. Through the VinylPlus initiative, the European PVC industry is creating a long-term sustainability framework for the entire PVC value chain. It aims to: recycle 800,000 tonnes of PVC per year by 2020, 900,000 tonnes by 2025 and at least one million tonnes by 2030 promote a sustainable use of additives improve PVC products sustainability and their contribution to sustainable development reduce progressively GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions as well as energy and resource consumption along the entire production chain move towards a low-carbon circular economy build sustainability awareness along the value chain and among stakeholders. the European Council of Vinyl Manufacturers – ECVM the European Plastics Converters – EuPC VINYLPLUS FOUNDING MEMBERS ARE: the European Stabiliser Producers Association – ESPA European Plasticisers (formerly ECPI)
