Day 1: The filmmaker worked on experiments for effects, including overlaying video on an old TV and adding lens flares. The challenge was fitting masks properly on the TV screen.
Days 2-3: Footage was edited to look like it was filmed at night instead of during the day for alternatives.
Day 4: All footage was transferred to the computer and lined up to the music to streamline editing.
Day 5: A film border was added around the video by drawing and feathering a mask. Freeze frames for titles were attempted but dropped.
Day 6: Original filmed ideas were disliked so scenes were replanned to connect stages of grief without a linear story.
Day
2. DAY 1 : Working on my First Experiment
I spent my first day of production working on
experiments on effects I wanted to try and
replicate in my video. The first of which was
overlaying a video onto an old tv and making the
film look grainy. I think the test went well,
however with the actual piece i want to have the
screen flash on an off and use a len flare to
mimic a light emitting from the finger. The main
struggle was getting the masks to fit properly
within the Tv.
3. DAY 2-3
Over the next few days I worked on
turning footage filmed during the
day to look like it was filmed at
night . This was going to be my
alternative to filming at night as my
camera doesn’t pick up footage
well in lower lights.
4. DAY 4
The main goal for todays work was to get all the footage from the sd card and onto the macs. After this I
wanted to get most of it lined up and in place so It was a lot quicker and easier to start editing it together
and to add effects and change colour patterns. Having it already synced up to the music made this a lot
easier throughout the day.
5. DAY 5: Second Day of actual production
The main success from today was creating the border
around the video. It took several attempts to hand draw
it and make it look neat and like a natural film border. I
did this my doing a mask overlay and upping the
feathering so it wasn’t as much as a harsh line and
creates a more of a faded texture . The main challenge
of today was trying to work out how I should do the
border.
Another challenge from today was trying to create a
freeze frame for the title scene. After finding several
ways of doing this I decided none of them looked as
effective or as clean as I wanted so I dropped this idea. I
used effects like posterize time and trying to drop the
fps so It would hold onto a single frame for a second
and then move on
6. DAY 6
After spending several house the previous night filming what was my original idea, reviewing it this morning I
didn’t like anything I filmed. It didn’t fit with what I had so far and overall I didn’t really see how it
completely fit. So a majority of today has gone into re planning certain scenes and finding new ways to make
them all feel connected without having a linear story pattern. Connecting each verse with a different stage of
grief.
Productivity today wasn’t great as I hated what I had filmed so I had nothing to directly add onto my video.
Tomorrow should be a lot better as im going to try and film some more today but tomorrow im filming one
of the main reoccurring shots in the studio so I will 100% have some more to add by the end of the day
tomorrow
7. DAY 7
Spent a majority of the day attempting to get the mask in the right place over the Tv
screen, this ended up turning into a huge ordeal of having to change the sizing
aswell as the shaping of the mask. This is made difficult with the mask always
wanting to curve rather than easily change shape. Once I was happy with the layout
of the overlay I am going to add some noise and grain to the picture to make it
seem like it is a video that’s being played on the screen.
8. DAY 8
Today my main goal was to get the lens flare idea to work. My goal was to have a flare on the end of my finger and
for it to follow my finger around the screen. I knew to do this I needed to time stamp the movement in order to be
able to track it, although at the time I wasn’t sure how to do this. I watched a youtube video that loosely explained
time stamping and how to make a white glow from the lens flare. Once Id watched about half the video I felt
confident to just mess around with it and teach myself time stamping and tracking. After this having some luck and
started working and looking good I decided to try and make it gradually get brighter.
9. DAY 9
After getting the lens flare practically completed yesterday, I needed
something to help clip all my pieces within the tv together, my first idea was
just to get it to black screen on the tv every time I wanted to switch however
I didn’t like how this looked, it looked too empty just to have the tv blank. My
second idea was maybe to have static and that static sound from when youd
start up an old tv, again after trying this I decided I didn’t like it. My final idea
was an off-air type of video with a slight sound of static which hardly comes
through with the sound overhead. I really liked this and after changing the
vibrance and saturation of the colours I think it looked really good
10. DAY 10
Todays main goal was to go back and find a way to better layout my first half of the clips. These are the shots
of the journey in the car. The way I had it first was just instantly cutting onto the next clip again and again.
This made it feel too fast and pacy and this isnt what I wanted for my video. I thought if I have a second or a
second and a half of it cut to straight black screen and back it would help slow down the pace and make it feel
slower. I liked how this looked as I think that it feels the same as when your on a long car journey and youre
fading in and out of conciousness and struggling to keep your eyes open. This really suited the my take on the
song and could pottentially add a feeling most viewers could relate to.
11. DAY 11
With this being the seoncd to last day of production I spent it making sure all the shots has
the same lumetri colour scales. This is where ive tweaked the warmth or vibrance just so It
fits the style that I want a bit more. Some of the shots were very greyscale and felt cold, I
changed this by making the colours more set to a warmer theme. Such as upping the levels
of the oranges reds and dropping the whites blues and greys. I think doing this made it
look and feel a lot nicer to watch as it didn’t feel as hostile or empty.
12. DAY 12
This was the final day of production and I worked on trying to neaten up the the effects and
making sure the overlay was in place for every single shot. This Is when I was struck with the
problem of not being able to use adobe encoder. My trial had ended so I wasn’t able to re
export any of the videos. This means that one shot has no overlay and some of the effects are
slightly out of sync and not as clean as they possibly could have been
